Why a realistic Los Santos in GTA 5 would be unconvincing

4.5
One amazing aspect of both last year’s Grand Theft Auto V and its predecessor, Grand Theft Auto IV, were the size, scope, and detail of each game’s cities

In a recent interview with Edge, Rockstar North Art Director Aaron Garbut commented on the process of building a city, and how it precludes the developers from actually creating a 100% replica of the real thing. “I’d never want to rebuild a city. I think that would be a lot less satisfying both for us to build and for the player to play. In a lot of ways, it would be less convincing, too. At least that’s how I rationalise it to myself,” Mr. Garbut explained, “we take the feel of a city, the one we get through visiting and through experiencing it our whole lives through media, and build that. We compress, we edit, we emphasise certain things and we end up with something that in some ways, I think, feels more like the popular perception of the place than the actual city. Only because the popular perception isn’t the real city, if that makes sense.”

Grand Theft Auto V was developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games on September 17th, 2013 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Grand Theft Auto Online launched on October 1st, 2013.

iriisqx The maps are great how they are, but they should be bigger for free-roam.

I partially agree, I think the option to be able to visit more than one city would be absolutely epic though

They really did make the right choice there. Makes there a lot more things to do

I believe they made the right choice when creating a map. It offers such a variety of things and there is so much to do.

GTA V has one of the best free roam maps of all time in my opinion.

MKP The map is crazy and they probably put so much work into it.

yeah more then people give 'em credit for people need to stop looking at the negatives and look at the better positives and diversity and mechanics of this great online place.

I really like the GTA V map, I wouldn't like an exact replica anyways.

You can tell they never copied exactly in ever single game but the rather hint to different aspects of various real cities I like how they create the maps, but i don't think i would mind driving through a real city causing havoc. I guess i can see why they don't do that, it would be like training 13 year olds to become terrorists.
