10-year-old scores felony charge through 'Minecraft

4.7
The online building-block game Minecraft is a great tool that can lead to the strengthening of a player's creative and strategic abilities.

For one unfortunate child, though, the game led to something else: a felony charge.

An unidentified 74-year-old grandmother from Lincoln, Neb., received a call from her bank notifying her of suspicious charges on her credit card account. It turns out that the thief was not some random cyber criminal, but rather her 10-year-old grandson. The child had managed to rack up over $800 on the card through Minecraft.

The only way the woman could reverse the charges was to file a police report. When she did so, the boy attracted police officers' suspicion of felony theft. Because of his age, the boy's case will be heard in juvenile court.

While the Xbox Live Marketplace does indeed charge for some additions to the game, such as themes or additional characters and tools, nothing is anywhere near $800. Most items available for purchase run anywhere from $1 to $4.

On the other hand, $800 can buy a lot of pickaxes.

MKP Wow, why would she press charges that led to a felony charge...

She wanted to reverse the charges from her credit card if i read the article correctly.

and the "only" way to get rid of the charges is to do a police report mhm. no she files a dispute and says i did not authorize these transactions, then they give her old saggy titty ass a new card and the money is refunded. and most likely microsoft would see that the money is not in their possesion therefore making his xbl account locked.

So if this was over Xbox Live and add-ons only cost $1-$4 then how did he get around $800? I mean even with every Minecraft item on the Xbox Live store is only like $100. I wonder if he just bought the game and add-ons on multiple accounts? I wonder what his parents did to punish him after this? Also he must have know what he was doing I mean he is 10 years old.

Industrialist Thats nice to hear, hope they give him the worst possible punishment for a kid his age.

youre retarded. a felony would destroy his life before he even got started with it

Kid is obviously a retard, and i'm sure most grandmothers would value a grandsons life over $800, so he must be a real dick.

XpectXtreme this is why you dont let little kids play video games

It's more up to the parents actually controlling the kids. Why she would just leave a 10 year old unsupervised while your credit card is easily accessible is beyond me

liner666 all these people that thinks its on xbox.. its on pc he would of donated to servers to gain stuff or went crazy on a 1000 slot server..

It says that it is on xbox

Yes it does say in the article "the Xbox Live Marketplace."

Then I think it would've been under the "Xbox News" section. They're just stating that Xbox does charge for skins, but all skins available would cost around $30, but not $800.

But if you look at the bottom of the article, it says the related forum is the Minecraft Xbox Forum, not the Minecraft PC Forum. Also, in the source link, it says "nebraska-xbox-minecraft-felony". Also, nowhere in this article does it say anything about the PC version of Minecraft.

The only way for her to get her money back is by charging him

As it clearly states in the article.
