Xbox One day one patch is not “really an optional thing,” says Penello

Xbox One will require a day one update to the system in order for it to function, according to the firm’s senior director of product management Albert Penello.

Speaking with Engadget, Penello said the system will not be usable straight out of the box, as consumers will be able to do “nothing” until the update is downloaded.

“You need the day one update,” he said. “Functionally, you will be able to do very little without taking the day one update. A lot of the apps come with the day one update because they wouldn’t have even been done.

“You’re gonna need to take this update. It’s not gonna be really an optional thing.”

Sony will release a day one update for PlayStation 4as well, for the same reasons as Microsoft, and to also to add updates to some of the system’s basic functions.

Xbox One launches November 22.

What angers me is I have a data cap and these stupid updates chew up around 10% of my monthly allowance sometimes. If its over a gig I am going to be one p i s s e d off ****

It shouldn't be too worrying due to most people having a fast internet connection these days. The update is rumored to be around 500MB at the moment. If somebody can't get an internet connection there is always the option to go over a friends/relatives/complete strangers house and download it

In the article it didn't say you need the internet. It said internet based apps need the day one update. You can play games offline, but you can't use apps. But it's not like you can use apps without the internet anyway right...

ttghanman so if you dont have internet and you buy the xbox one your spending 400 on a box that just sits there and dosent do much until you update it

Mostly everything nowadays require internet to be useful.

Yeah if you don't have internet you should've be spending $500 on a new console. Should be spending it on internet HAHA
