Valve unveils prototype Steam Box specs

4.6
Valve Software has plans to ship 300 prototype Steam Box machines to eager testers by the end of 2013. This morning the company revealed the hardware to be included within these computers:
The 300 prototype units will ship with the following components:
GPU: some units with NVidia Titan, some GTX780, some GTX760, and some GTX660
CPU: some boxes with Intel : i7-4770, some i5-4570, and some i3
RAM: 16GB DDR3-1600 (CPU), 3GB DDR5 (GPU)
Storage: 1TB/8GB Hybrid SSHD
Power Supply: Internal 450w 80Plus Gold
Dimensions: approx. 12 x 12.4 x 2.9 in high
Instead of shipping top-of-the-line technology to each tester, Valve has opted to ship a variety of configurations. This allows the company a more accurate view of how Steam Box will perform in the hands of the public, as not every player will have access to the latest, greatest hardware. However, if you grow tired of how your Steam Box performs, Valve claims that each of these prototypes is fully upgradeable using relatively common components.

-Skillz You will be able to use a ps4 controller on it

I think so yeah, since I read something about using basic functions of the PS4 controller on PC.

PawnStars I also play games mainly to play with friends and I don't see this pulling the average gamer away from Sony or Microsoft

It's a pc so you play with all your pc friends.... It's not like you can't play with people who don't have it.

I said the "average gamer"

PC games played by year, with % change from previous year.
2005 568,968
2006 558,074 (-2%)
2007 2,920,185 (+423%)
2008 5,857,447 (+101%)
2009 6,187,437 (+6%)
2010 15,728,587 (+154%)
2011 29,631,542 (+89%)
2012 33,355,879 (+13%)
Console games played by year, with % change from previous year.
All Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony combined, including portables.
Hardware listed is the year in which the hardware was released.
2005 48,621,847 XBox 360, PlayStation Portable 1000
2006 140,890,341 (+290%) DS Lite, PlayStation 3, Wii
2007 321,998,102 (+229%) PSP 2000, PlayStation Eye
2008 578,241,141 (+80%) PSP 3000
2009 570,507,923 (-3%) DSi, DSi XL, PSP Go, PS3 Slim
2010 614,779,227 (+8%) Kinect, 360 Slim, Playstation Move
2011 578,873,094 (-6%) 3DS, Wii Family Edition
2012 445,278,842 (-23%) 3DS XL, PlayStation Vita, Wii Mini, Wii U

So that's why in my OPINION I don't see it pulling away just an "average gamer", a lot of "casual" gamers don't have computers with the capability of playing newer games so they just buy consoles so they don't have to worry about it. Never said that this will do poorly and I'm sure it'll pull some ppl away from the two main consoles but not as much as some people think

Beautiful stats, I might use them

-TheJoker- Xbox One and Ps4 is still better.

No the steam os is running a version of linux. It is pretty much a console pc. Plus the specs destroy the ps4 and xbone

Maybe better specs but wont make as much as either PS4 or Xbox One.

The console war between sony and microsoft just got put in perspective.

The lowest spec steammachine just destroyed either console. And, you have to remember, games for steam are optimised well - this can only get better for valve

Couldn't agree more. The only people saying "consoles are better" are the half-wits that don't have a single clue about how computing/processing/GPUs/etc. work and just think their moronic, oblivious thoughts on how powerful these boxes are, let alone how well the entire system will function together.

I see this costing more than the xbone and ps4 but if they manage to get this down to $500 us dollars this would make the xbox look like a joke. Sadly I don't see this coming out until fall 2014 or 2015

If they were to manage to get this down to $500 it would make both next-gen consoles look like a joke. I'm considering waiting for the price announcement before I think about getting an Xbox or PS4, chances are it isn't going to be cheap though.

Mozilla-Firefox why get this when you can get the Xbox one :)

Better specs + some people like PC more than consoles. It's all opinion.
