Microsoft: Put Xbox One vertical 'at your own risk'

4.5
If you're planning to buy an Xbox One, you should make sure to lay it down flat, warns Microsoft. Anyone using their Xbox One in a vertical orientation risks damage to both the console and its games.

The problem, according to Microsoft, stems from the Xbox One disc slot. While the Xbox 360's disc tray was capable of either horizontal or vertical use, the new slot was designed with horizontal configurations in mind.

"We don't support vertical orientation; do it at your own risk," said Albert Panello, senior director of product management for Microsoft's Xbox division. "It wouldn't be a cooling problem, we just didn't design the drive for vertical. Because it's a slot loading drive, we just didn't design it for both."

Mortar It doesn't really make much of a difference, at least this way, it promotes safer storage. I think that they will need to make sure this information is known by those who purchase the console, be it printed on the box or in the manual, as it could be troublesome for the percentage of people who store their consoles vertically.

It should be printed on the box for sure.
Even a sticker on the console itself that can be easily removed would be much warranted so people are breaking a $500 console the day that they are getting it.

I don't know why people put their Xbox vertical in the first place. It looks proper laying down and that is how it should be kept, lol.

Texans Well this really isn't news, this is just like the Xbox 360.

The Xbox 360 could be vertical without a problem, not many people did it though.

I have never put a console vertical anyways, I wasn't going to do it this time either.

Lia I've only recently had my 360 standing vertically to save room in my setup. I guess I won't be doing that for the xbox one...time to change my setup xD

I had my xbox vertical for less than a day and I nearly broke it haha.

I kicked my 360 over by accident twice on the same day had to buy Fable 3 three times in one day after the second time I decided to lay my Xbox down flat lol.

Wow,

I got lucky I kicked my xbox once and it fell over and my disk got scratched but didn't brake.
