Xbox One won’t get a lot of “stuff” 360 has for “for a while”

Xbox One will miss out on some features Xbox 360 has had for a while now, according to Microsoft senior director of product management and planning Albert Penello.

IGN posed to Penello that Microsoft’s promise of all these great Xbox One features might be miss-selling the console to territories that won’t be receiving them, he replied, “I think even in the U.S., there’s going to be a lot of stuff that was on 360 that isn’t going to be on Xbox One for a while.

“Y’know, it’s an interesting dynamic that you find yourself in with console launches, but particularly when you’re coming from a super mature platform… in the old days of console transitions, the expectation of what would be moving to the next console was basically isolated to games. And if you think about all the stuff we’ve done with Xbox 360 and how much it’s different in the last ten years, you basically have ten years of innovation, ten years of experiences, and then, trying to take that and build an entirely new platform, with new hardware and a new software architecture.

“I mean, I totally understand people’s frustrations, and it’s hard to give an answer beyond the fact that, from my seat, it’s a console transition and this is part and parcel. There’s a lot of things that we’ll talk about in our vision for the product that aren’t going to be there at launch.”

Then came some Xbox One TV talk, which seems to be Microsoft’s ‘go-to’ topic as of late. Penello continued, “TV, if you want to continue, would be another criticism. We talk a lot about TV and that’s only going to work basically in Japan and the U.S. at launch where you have HDMI-in scenarios, so you’ll say ‘hey, what if I have a terrestrial over the air?’

“We won’t have a solution for that right away, but we still sell it as part of the vision. So it’s honest criticism and you’d love to have the new launch be everything that you had before and more, but unfortunately it’s an untenable [proposition].”

What do you think of Microsoft selling this “vision” as one complete package to territories that won’t be able to experience it for a while? Let us know what you think below.

I don't get why they release it then, I think they should finish their console before releasing it.

THCv3 If they are not ready, they should not be releasing it just yet.

I agree, they should only release once the console is fully finished.

raefon oh how to continue make people move to the PS4 instead.

Hmmmmm we are releasing a console that really does nothing better than your Xbox 360, doesn't play any of your old games, is basically a media centre that well cant do that well either unless your in maybe the US or Japan because hey why not try to do it where Sony is and the look at Microsoft as that odd competitor which is like the red headed step child.

Wow they really have just made my mind up to ditch any loyalty and switch to the PS4.

I wish people would either keep up with gaming news or just not comment. It makes you look ignorant.(your grammar doesn't help, either) First of all, the TV function will work anywhere in the world, so long as your cable/sat receiver has an HDMI out. If your TV service doesn't hook up via HDMI.. well, then it is time for you to upgrade. Welcome to the 21st century. I don't think they should even bother with worrying about support for terrestrial air waves. It is a thing of the past. That's like hooking a VCR up to your 3D HDTV. No thanks, I'll stick with my HDMI. If you don't think the Xbox One can do anything the 360 couldn't, you are clearly ignorant about next-gen consoles.

By the way, your precious PS4 will not have all of it's functionality available at launch either. So, if you are going to criticize Microsoft for that, you better start criticizing Sony as well. It is unreasonable to expect either console to have everything there at launch. Every device with an OS is constantly upgrading, improving and adding new features. Look at the 360, they added the web browser, Netflix and more apps than I could count, avatars, nxe, upgraded communication codex, etc. Things will be constantly evolving. I pray the system is not done innovating on Day One. Of course they will be adding things, tweaking things and what not. Don't be a fool.

Uhm, you are claiming others don't read. In this article it states that ONLY Japan and the USA will have the TV functionality at launch. And yes, it doesn't really do anything better than the 360 at launch like they stated in the article. Maybe better hardware, but what's the point if Microsft are concentrating on making a media centre instead of a games console. Might as well just buy a PC if you wanted all the stuff Microsoft is trying to include. It's pathetic. Just trying to appeal to everyone although I doubt non-gamers are interested in an Xbox One (no they really aren't) and so it's a pathetic strategy. A massive company like them and they don't even perform market research. Now how ignorant is that.
