Microsoft buys Xbone.com

4.6
"Xbone," as an alternative moniker for the Xbox One, sprang from the depths of the internet's hive-mind with such immediacy that it may as well have been included in the console's announcement PR. In fact, the nickname has become so ubiquitous that Microsoft has gone ahead and purchased Xbone.com, according to whois records dug up by the sleuths at Fusible.

We wouldn't say the URL is doing a tremendous amount of positive work for Microsoft, though. Navigating to Xbone.com redirects to a Bing search for the term "Xbone," where the very first entry listed under "Related Searches" is "Xbox One Terrible," as of press time. Whoops!

There's not a whole lot else Microsoft could have done with the domain, however, as having it redirect to anything more official would be like signing off on the term's legitimacy. Under the circumstances, this seems like all the company can do to control the term's usage online.

-Mark I really don't like the nickname Xbone. Lol I will probably always call it the Xbox One.

Microsoft probably just bought the domain in case the nickname sticks.

I agree with this guy I will always see it as Xbox One and if the nickname sticks I still won't be calling it Xbone lol. Suppose they are being carefull this time.

I figured they would buy it just a matter of time.

Xbone doesn't even sound like a console to me. Even after Major Nelson says that he dislikes the name they still get the domain, which is pretty funny.

Did none of you guys read the article? Apparently not. To quote this article, "this seems like all the company can do to control the term's usage online." which is probably exactly why they bought it. Oh and for the intelligent one who said "Complains about the name xbone....buys domain to link it to the new xbox one....logic", it does exactly the opposite, and links it to a bing search of "Xbone", not linking it to an official site so no one gets the idea that its the official nickname... smh people really need to read the articles I see so many ignorant posts on here its ridiculous.
