There's room for Call of Duty and GTA, says Activision Publishing CEO

Call of Duty goes up against other potential blockbusters on an annual basis, but once or twice in a console generation, during a Grand Theft Auto release year, the stakes are raised a little higher.

Grand Theft Auto 5 has a fair chance of knocking the FPS series off the top of the annual best-seller lists it so regularly dominates, but Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg has told CVG there's room for both Rockstar's game and Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Ghosts to succeed this year.

"Obviously, [GTA] is a hugely successful franchise, and I get asked about our big competitors every year," he said in a newly published interview.

"We're always up against iconic titles, and I know people like to tell a clash-of-the-titans story, but I feel there's lots of evidence that there's room for more than one successful game, and indeed more than one successful blockbuster. And if people only have money for a few games, I like our chances that Call of Duty will be one of them."

Asked if he believes Call of Duty can continue to grow as a franchise, Hirshberg said: "I certainly hope so. The fact that it's a console transition year adds complexity, and if you look historically at what happens during console transitions is there are short-term challenges followed by long-term opportunities.

"We've discussed that pretty openly, but that said I think the franchise has never been stronger. More people are playing Call of Duty now than ever before, and in terms of performance we're producing the best season of digital content we've ever had.

"These things point to key interest and momentum, but there are challenges and confusion in the marketplace with regards to whether people are going for current gen or next gen. I think the creative challenge we have with Call of Duty is to make a game the fans love and at the same time build a new game that's innovative."

11 more days! :D Why even mention CoD? I mean it truely lives up to it's name at least... COD... Fish -_- Yeah... That's all Call of Duty has now. GTA V will be the last great game on Xbox 360 for me! And Battlefield 4! Gotta love Battlefield too :)

That's a give , I hated gta4, it wasn't a real GTA. This one looks great

GTA IV was too realistic in my opinion (besides the car handling which was utter rubbish) Think they tried a few new features to make it more real(ish) but forgot what GTA was about. Fun and something we could go on to escape reality for a little while.


GTA 4 looked unfinished to me. As if GTA 4 was an experiment for GTA 5. The game was extremely boring due to the fact that there was nothing to do on your free time.

I am sure COD is the only game that has ever done this, correct me if I am wrong, but it's pretty ridiculous how they expect everyone to pay $60 every year for a new COD when we have one that we have prestiged in a few times.

Honestly only reason why I did buy the games when it came out for midnight release was because I was hoping for something different, but it turns out it's the same **** different day.


Many people complain about COD and it baffles me why people continue to buy the game I agree with you when basically it is the same game over and over with different tweaks I agree %100 with you there. But on tpic GTAV will be one of the best games to come out ever in my opinion.


I buy it just so I have it and in case I ever get bored I can go blast it out but I will only buy CoD once in awhile or when its on a very cheap offer. Also people who complain are massive CoD fans but are wanting more from the game so I guess they can have a say due to the fact they have spent more than most for a game that hardly changes. I have the Collectors Edition of GTA V only because I know a LOT will have changed since GTA IV


I'm only getting COD ghosts as I'm keeping it for collectors etc. GTAV Will have a major amount of changes and I hope that the game is not a let down. What am I saying its Rockstar disregard my last message.
