Xbox One no longer requires plugged-in Kinect, Whitten says

4.6
Xbox One does not need the Kinect sensor in order to function normally, Xbox Corporate VP Marc Whitten tells IGN. This runs contrary to previous statements: In May, Microsoft Studios Corporate VP Phil Spencer said the Xbox One would require the Kinect to be plugged in.

It's unclear whether this is a shift in policy or phrasing, but Whitten says that while ditching Kinect may limit the console's capabilities, the sensor isn't a necessary piece of equipment at all times. Instead, you'll only need it for voice- and motion-based navigation features, or to play games like Fantasia: Music Evolved, which rely on the sensor.

"Games use Kinect in a variety of amazing ways, from adding voice to control your squad mates, to adding lean and other simple controls beyond the controller, to full immersive gameplay," he says. "That said, like online, the console will still function if Kinect isn't plugged in, although you won't be able to use any feature or experience that explicitly uses the sensor."

Clean out some extra space on the entertainment center or in the closet: it depends on what you play.

Jasonscootboy12 That was stupid. They need to stop listening to their customers and people who havent even played the console yet. They had an idea and need to stick with it.

The only problem was it was a terrible idea. The kinect is both a shoddy controller AND mic, and even you have to admit, people don't like things being forced on them, like several shitty policies and features that ruin the experience. You can't have a good idea without critisism, and if people who don't even play Xbox also start saying their ideas are ****, don't you think there is something wrong there?
I'm sorry but have you tried the new kinect ? No? How do you know how good it is then? The new kinect has been worked on and optimized where kinect 1 was a quick and sudden release to try compete with the Wii. Unless you have tried something don't comment bad things about it.

But yet those same people can watch the videos showcasing it and its features.

Just, no...

Wait, they need to stop listening to their customers? You mean the people who pay for the product? No customers = no money = failure. Ms had a vision and this vision wasn't shared by the majority of consumers due to the fact that they keep going back on their policies.

You don't have to play the console to know that there are bad features such as this. It was completely pointless that the Kinect was mandatory and it HAD to be plugged in. That's stupid af. You don't take a product that's so heavily disliked and adopted by so few (1%) and force it to the 99%. MS is finally taking their head out of ass and moving forward. Notice how every time ms goes back on one of their original policies, their pre order sales go up significantly.

What MS is doing right now is for their best interest. Whether you agree or not.

Now that they no longer require a kinect, let's see if they shave $100 off that price....(which they won't, but here's to hoping...)

platyui
Cokes
brendan64shark I really did not care but if people complain enough things happen.

Imagine if the Kinect broke. They would have to buy another Xbox One because of it. That's why people complain.

Don't be stupid. There would be replacement kinects you can buy without buying a whole xbox one again.

The point is they would not be able to use their xbox's until they shelled out whatever god-awful amount microsoft asked for the kinect. You must expand your views a bit.

Johnus So now all we have is an Xbox 360 v2.

So much for 'Next generation gaming'

I completely agree! It's like they don't even know what they want their own console to be like.
Exactly if they weren't sure they should've done more polling and testing I think they were trying to just get it out there as quick as they can like last gen.

Oh please. 7.5GB increase in RAM from the 360, and a vastly superior CPU and GPU, and you call it the Xbox 360 v2? What is the PS4 then? The PS3 v2? News flash, the new hardware is what makes the next gen system a next gen system. Not to mention the new software and features they've introduced to take advantage of the hardware changes. This goes for both consoles. If you're going to argue that the X1 is the X360 v2, than the PS4 is essentially the PS3 v2.

"They're just trying to get it out there as quick as they can". They've been ready for a long time. The hardware, design, and features have all been ready since before E3 and the console announcement in April. They knew what they wanted the console to be like, but the people didn't share their vision. There were advantages to the always online and mandatory Kinect, but the people focused on the negatives and forced Microsoft to make changes to appeal to the consumer. Microsoft was preparing for the future, when broadband internet is more available and when devs could take full advantage of Kinect 2, but not for the present when not everyone has broadband internet and people still have a bad taste in their mouth from the original Kinect.

The Xbox One is far from the "Xbox 360 v2", just as the PS4 is far from the "PS3 v2". Both systems are without a doubt worthy of being called "Next Gen". They changed what people didn't like and suddenly their system isn't good enough and Microsoft has no integrity? Get over yourself.
You're an absolute legend. Couldn't have said it better if I tried. These PS4 fanboys so hypocritical...

OT: Microsoft are really pushing Sony recently...

First of all your a moron for even bringing other consoles into this it shows how bias and uncomfortable you are with people criticising the console you favor, no one said anything PS3 or PS4 related. Second of all hardcore gamers that understand hardware and specs don't even make half of the consumers it is the features people want and MS clearly has no clue what principle they even want their console to have.

Hardware and specs is what consumers want for better gamers. Hard core gamers understand that to play a good game is to have a console with the correct specs to get the best out of it.
