Nintendo loses battle to take control of WiiU.com domain

4.5
Nintendo has lost the fight to gain control over the domain WiiU.com after a complaint was filed back in February.

WiiU.com in all its glory...
The decision was posted to the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) website on Saturday, confirming that Nintendo's complaint to gain control of WiiU.com was denied, as reported by Fusible.

The domain has been registered by a company in Burlington, Massachusetts since 2004.

Fusible notes that WiiU.com was put up for auction, yet once Nintendo filed the complaint with WIPO the listing was removed. It appears that Nintendo will have to pay a sizable amount in order to have control of the domain.

WiiU.com is currently a placeholder site containing link to both Wii U and non-WiiU content.

There has been no explanation provided as to why Nintendo lost the case.

I think this is pretty funny that a company like Nintendo cant get a domain name that they want.

And yet Microsoft gets any domain they please. :p

I wonder if Microsoft filed a complaint to get ownership of WiiU.com if they would get it?

LWRPosted:

Surely he/she could sell the domain.

I bet Nintendo would pay a bit for it!

iJarH3ad WiiU.com was created first before Nintendo published WiiU, Person who own WiiU.com deserved to keep it. I'm sure Nintendo had enough power to control everything....

Agreed, they cant launch a product and expect to take the url when its been up since 2004

I would agree with you if the current domain owner had use of the site. It's one of those annoying useless sites that nobody likes.

I think the owner deserves to keep it too, its been a website since 2004, way before the WII U, came out in stores.

They obviously didn't offer enough cash. I'm sure people won't die without it anyway.
