Xbox One exec says PS4 specs are "meaningless", games more important

4.7
Speaking to OXM at Microsoft's Xbox One reveal last month, Xbox product planning boss Albert Penello has downplayed technical comparisons between Xbox One and PS4, arguing that hardware analysis is "meaningless" when "our games and experiences are going to be every bit as good as, if not better" than those you'll find on competing consoles.

Asked whether he was cautious of comparisons with PS4 by our editor Jon Hicks, Penello pointed out that few players really buy consoles for the specs alone. "The problem is that Sony decided to go out and publish a bunch of numbers, which are in some ways meaningless," he told us. "Because this isn't like 1990, when it was 16-bit versus 32-bit.

"As a matter of fact," he continued, "they actually go out and they talk about how proud they are about their off-the-shelf parts. Our guys'll say, we touched every single component in the box and everything there is tweaked for optimum performance."

"For me, I'd rather not even have the conversation, because it's not going to matter," Penello went on. "The box is going to be awesome. The games are going to be awesome. I heard this exact same argument last generation and it's a pointless argument, because people are debating things which they don't know about. They're not [head silicon engineer] Nick Baker or [corporate vice president of IEB hardware Todd Holmdahl], and I'm not [lead PS4 architect] Mark Cerny, so why are we having this discussion?"

Penello feels consumers will pick a console for the games it offers, rather than for its capabilities on paper. "Here's what you care about," he said. "You bought a system to play great games and have great experiences. I feel like our games and experiences are going to be every bit as good, if not better, technically - on top of all the magic we're going to add with the instant switching, and the power of the cloud.

"So the whole numbers game - yeah, I've been following it online and it's like, we tried having that argument last time. Do I want to talk about HDMI 1.3 or 1.4, it's like 'argh!' It doesn't matter. Did you see Call of Duty, it looks f**king awesome! It's going to be great, you know. So we're just saying, it's not worth the debate."

to be honest i'm leaning toward the ps4 if i decide to buy a console because i love playstation exclusives and how they have amazing stories. Xbox is only geared toward multiplayer it seems. and it is fun for a while but it gets old.

SasukeUzamaki 8GB DDR5 to 5GB DDR3? Microsoft tries to downplay anything, they know they've been beat, any logical person knows PS4 is a world better.

You would know that NOT A SINGLE GAME is going to utilize even 5GB of RAM. So, it REALLY is pointless, as of now. A couple years from now.. who knows? But high res textures and resolutions dont eat up RAM, they eat up VRAM. Unless the actual RAM is acting like VRAM, or it is split b/w CPU and GPU. If thats the case neither one will have high res textures in two years. You people forget all these consoles are literally uncompareable when it comes to hardware

The RAM is also acting as VRAM and there will be a significant change since developers will only be able to touch 5GB of that RAM while on PS4 they will allow devs to access 7GB of RAM which might now sound alot but will add alot more to the game. Also your stupid yeah it does split between the CPU and GPU that's why it's called GDDR5 RAM. In hardware Sony did beat them by alot graphics wise. Why do you think Microsoft is trying to downplay it. Now the Xbox One and the PS4 will both be great consoles but in the long run PS4 will still be high graphical wise.

For multiplatfrom games there will probably be any significant changes but for exclusives, that's where we will see the true graphical power for both consoles and also it will be interesting on which console they will develop on first for multiplatforms. Last gen it was Xbox due to ease of developing but next gen since they are identical architectural-wise it will be interesting to see what happens with that.

Again, someone reading things from a website. Everyone focusing on RAM however not realising that most of the other parts aren't up to scratch to deal with the added bandwidth.

In my opinion, the difference in specs will not be noticeable if you put the consoles side by side and play a game on them.

i don't think it matters much especially for cross platform games because they would be designed for both systems in mind and i don't think developers are going to go out of there way to use that tiny bit of extra performance the ps4 has over the xbox one in some categories

Honestly, I think people are going to care about what they are buying and how much they are spending.
