Xbox 180: Microsoft to 'completely reverse' its DRM control on Xbox One

Update: Microsoft has released an official statement, it can be located here - http://news.xbox.com/2013/06/update

A new report from Giant Bomb states that Microsoft will drop its DRM control with Xbox One and the need for the console to log in online every 24 hours.

According to the GB report, the following will occur:

• No more always online requirement
• The console no longer has to check in every 24 hours
• All game discs will work on Xbox One as they do on Xbox 360
• An Internet connection is only required when initially setting up the console
• All downloaded games will function the same when online or offline
• No additional restrictions on trading games or loaning discs
• Region locks have been dropped

Discussion of the recent changes can be found within this thread - http://www.thetechgame.com/Forums/t=5363350/microsofts-announcement-about-xbox-one-19th-june-2013.html

"An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games - After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.

"Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today - There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360.

"In addition to buying a disc from a retailer, you can also download games from Xbox Live on day of release. If you choose to download your games, you will be able to play them offline just like you do today. Xbox One games will be playable on any Xbox One console -- there will be no regional restrictions.

"These changes will impact some of the scenarios we previously announced for Xbox One. The sharing of games will work as it does today, you will simply share the disc. Downloaded titles cannot be shared or resold. Also, similar to today, playing disc based games will require that the disc be in the tray."

The benefits are obvious - Xbox One will be usable with or without an internet connection, dispersing the fears of a vocal and outraged crowd who staged a backlash against the original online-reliant policy.

The changes also re-open the door to game rental services, the lending of games between friends and the purchase and sale of used games to anyone, anywhere without fear of DRM control.

And a region-free console will mean gamers will be able to import titles from other regions without restriction.

Microsoft has once again become the console champ of the world. Very glad to hear this. Ps4 sales will be at a stop now...

Bet the pre order numbers and the amazon poll scared the crap out of them. This is a good step but hopefully they'll disable to need to have kinect. Then I might buy it.

liamcole123 It's official, Xbox One has just won the console race, I've heard many Sony fanboys say that the Xbox One would be better without the DRM and now it's gone, MS really are in the lead! :D

God. MS is not in the lead feel free to look at the sales. Not to mention ps4 still has better software compared to the xbox... Im glad the xbox fixed that but the ps4 is still a $100 cheaper without a kinect.

Look at Amazon. Pre-orders for the Xbox One are leading PS4. That was BEFORE this announcement. Feel free to look at the sales. Although kind of hope they move towards digital games since it can disks can be a hassle.

On amazon the ps4 has 2 different models when they should be listed the same. They had a day one launch console and just the regular console. (Makes no sense but thats how amazon organized it) Also they have separate bundles with games like BF 4, COD Ghosts, etc. I know that digital games will be day one releases with the ps4 because ps3 already does that. I would think MS would do that as well.

How is it in the lead it is 100 DOLLARS MORE THAN THE PS4!! sorry to rage but 100 dollars is alot of money for some people

If it's a lot of money then you wouldn't buy the consoles in the first place, besides, Xbox has tons more features and a Kinect!

And now comes the crying from those who preordered the PS4.

Well done Microsoft, my hat certainly goes off to you. Xbox One preordered for the birthday :-)

Funny if this is all just a test. If you think about it, a lot of games will still have DRM.
