Sony exec says no PS3 price cut planned

Sony has no current plans to introduce a PS3 price cut, despite the upcoming release of PS4.

The company showed off the PS4 hardware for the first time during its E3 conference last week, when it confirmed a Christmas PS4 release date in Europe and the US and a PS4 price of £349 / €399 / $399.

While some had forecast that the PS4 launch details would be accompanied by a PS3 price cut announcement, Sony Computer Entertainment UK managing director Fergal Gara told GamesIndustry International such a move isn't being considered at the moment.

"There's no plans as yet," he said. "The PlayStation 3 is a system where it hasn't been particularly easy to get the costs down.

"We continue to look at opportunities, there may or may not be any more, I genuinely can't answer to that," he added.

"But it will certainly be a more keenly priced machine in relative to PlayStation 4. It will sit there as a viable entry level machine for years to come. It will be different by territory as to how long its life is. There's still a lot of love for PS3."

Despite PS4's upcoming launch, Sony has dedicated plenty of resources to PS3 games set for release in 2013. As well as the just-launched The Last of US, the platform holder intends to release major first-party PS3 games like Beyond: Two Souls and Gran Turismo 6 before Christmas.

I can see why they are not doing this. Besides the Xbox 360's price was never cut. The PS3 cost money to manufacture, so hey have to make it out of cheaper materials which would lower the quality to lower the price.

Honestly why not just cut the price.. they are about to make hundreds of millions in about 6 months.. it can't hurt the company.

Sony cannot afford to lower the price of the PS3. When they announced that the PS4 would be $399, it was instantly obvious that Sony would have to make not so popular choices in order to keep it priced at $399. The PS3 is $250 and the PS Move for the PS3 is another $100, so the PS4's move will cost $100-150 and the controller will probably be $70. Sony is not lowering any prices so that they can list the PS4 at $399. The $100 price difference between the consoles is nothing major, Xbox One comes with everything on day one and to own a PS4 with Multiplayer and a PS Move, it will cost you over $600 plus the monthly ps+ fee

look on ebay and amazon, should still go down on there.


I think brand new ones will still be very close the original price, he might get lucky and find brand new ones for cheap or he might want a used one but I wouldn't buy a used console.

I got my ps3 for $80 used but in new condition, only bought it for exclusives
