$400 PS4 'puts no pressure on Wii U at all', says Nintendo exec

Sony and Microsoft are preparing to launch their high-end consoles at the end of the year, but Nintendo is entirely unfazed, according to Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime.

The PS4 is expected to pose a particular threat to Wii U with its $400/£349 price point - just $50/£50 more than the 'Deluxe/Premium' version of Nintendo's significantly lower-spec machine. But Fils-Aime brushes off the challenge.

"It puts no pressure on us at all," Fils-Aime insisted during a chat with Kotaku. "Sony and Microsoft are going to do what they're going to do. My bet is that there are going to be more announcements the closer we get to whatever their launch date is."

He went on, "From my perspective, I can't focus on that. I have to focus on: How do we satisfy the needs of all of the consumers out there with Nintendo products? How do we make sure they understand our proposition? How do we make sure they're excited about the software that we offer? And from that standpoint we're going to let our competition do what they're going to do."

Wii U has struggled at retail in its early life largely due to a lack of compelling software releases, which is something Nintendo aims to rectify in the run up to Christmas.

"You know, I think by the end of this holiday, after we've launched Wind Waker, after we've launched Donkey Kong Country, after we've launched Mario 3D World, I think we're going to be in a very good position," said Fils-Aime.

Katsumi Nintendo is featured around a different target market than the PS4, Nintendo are more aimed towards the casual side of gaming where PS4 is focusing on the hardcore side. People will still buy the WiiU for the exclusives never the less

I agree, people aren't going to buy a Wii U to play games like Battlefield and Call of Duty, they buy it for the casual games, I don't think many people decide between the two.

I know I wouldn't. When I buy the Wii U I'm getting it for what Nintendo showed at E3 this year and any other games I missed on the Wii U. Like any Mario games I have missed, I will be getting those as well.

If i get the WiiU it will be for the Mario and Zelda franchises. Moster Hunter 3 ultimate looks pretty good as well. The reason most consumers buy a console is for the games, if the WiiU pulls out good games people will buy it regardless of the specs

In all honesty I don't care about the specs on a console at all. I'm getting the Xbox One as well and I think people have mentioned that is has lower specs compared to the PS4. The only time I care about specs is when it comes to computers and that's about it. I'm buying a console to play and enjoy not to brag about who has better specs and what not.

Artro Why should the Wii U be afraid of a better console than there's, what else do they have to lose? But when the new games like Mario and Donkey Kong come out they will make more sales because everyone loves those games

Thats true, that is what keeps them in business, is these classic games that everyone loves and now that all these great Mario games and Wii Fit is coming to Wii U they are headed for a big rebound.

I'm hoping Nintendo gets a huge turn around, they get shunned to a degree. Even though they have some pretty amazing games (some nostalgic and some just fun to play) they still get turned down by a lot of gamers. I get some people get bored and will move on but Nintendo doesn't exactly get the recognition they deserve.

Pane I've Never Tried The Wii U, But Never really Liked The First Wii. That's Mainly Why I Did Not Buy The Wii U.

I had the Wii but got bored with it so that's why I didn't get the Wii U.

Same here! I had the Wii but never got the Wii U!

Haha! True
The Wii U doesn't have the best reviews but I honestly don't care, I want to play them games xD
