Apple lifts App Store ban on game emulators

Apple has lifted its restriction on retro game emulators on the iOS App Store.

In an update published on Friday, the company announced that game emulators – previously banned from the iPhone store – will now be allowed globally, as well as downloadable games.

The company noted that developers are responsible for all software offered, “including ensuring that such software complies with these Guidelines and all applicable laws”.

Game emulators have long been banned from iOS, but as noted by The Verge, today’s move should allow the retro console emulators currently available on Android to bring their apps to the iPhone.

The decision was likely influenced by the European Union’s decision to allow third-party app stores in the region, which could have enticed users with apps banned on the official App Store.

Several developers recently expressed uncertainty over the future of Apple’s game subscription service, Apple Arcade.

Speaking to Mobilegamer.biz, sources voiced concerns about Apple’s game subscription service in the wake of the iPhone maker reportedly cancelling projects, cutting developer payouts, and turning its back on original games.
