PlayStation 4 Not Backwards Compatible With Retail or Digital Games

4.7
In a conversation with journalists, the President of Sony’s Worldwide Studios said that PS3 games - both the retail and downloadable variety - will not be compatible with PlayStation 4, at least not natively. In other words, your PS3 discs won’t work with the new console, neither will any games you downloaded. This means that titles like Journey, The Unfinished Swan, Shatter, and hundreds of other games available in the digital space will not be carried over to PlayStation 4, in addition to the collection of PS3 discs you already have.

However, you *will* be able to play PS1, PS2 and PS3 games on the PlayStation 4 by downloading them. The PlayStation 4 will include the services Gaikai. They offer cloud storage, and this is where you will most likely buy your old games from. The bad thing is, if you already own a game and you want to play it on the PS4, you will have to buy it from the online store in order to play it.

“There are two ways to play legacy content: emulation, or cloud services from Gaikai. But native support of digital games from PS3, no, sorry. It doesn’t work.”

AwesomeSauce69 Welcome to xbox every PS3 user :) You will most defiantly enjoy your stay.

And you know the new Xbox will have backwards compatibility, how? Sony have done this to keep the costs of the console down. It is based of completely different architecture from the PS3. To have backwards compatibility they would have had to add in a PS3 inside the PS4.

TomClancy I think this is stupid. I understand that it may be hard to do though.

They did it with all the other Consoles out right now. If I can play Super Smash Bro on my Wii, why can't I play Little Big Planet on my Ps4? A very large marketing risk by Sony imo. Also, without a very strong title release right at the Release of the Ps4, sales will plummet the first week. No one spends 450$ on a console to put it on a shelf and admire it until Fifa 14 is released.

You just gave me a valid reason on how I should wait some time before buying the Ps4.I'm buying the xbox no matter what.
