GameStop: next Xbox sales will suffer if used games are blocked

4.7
According to GameStop, they believe that any console which blocks the use of used games in any way would definitely be a bad marketing choice for the console in question. In this case, the console in question is the Next-gen Xbox which still hasn't been announced yet.

GameStop spokesman Matt Hodges told sources:
"We know the desire to purchase a next-generation console would be significantly diminished if new consoles were to prohibit playing pre-owned games, limit portability or not play new physical games."

He also stated that GameStop came to this conclusion based on surveys of their most active customers, the 21 million US members of their PowerUp Rewards loyalty program.

GameStop generated 27 percent of their revenue and around 46 percent of profit from used games during the business year which ended in January 2012. And a report by sources about the used games possibly being 'killed-off' caused GameStop's share prices to drop by 6.8 percent, which is their biggest fall in a month.

Although the used game blocking story was a rumor, if Microsoft does make that move, many consumers who play consoles and would rather spend their money on used games like most people, have said they will be switching consoles.

Microsoft has responded to these rumors by saying "We do not comment on rumors or speculation. We are always thinking about what is next for our platform, but we don't have anything further to share at this time."

Guys I don't think this is going to happen. Microsoft can be dumb sometimes yes, but you have to understand that a company that big doesn't make mistakes like that. Limiting themselves to users only having new games would be horrible, as people can't always afford $60 games.

If they do go along with this, it's going to be a terrible idea. Come on Microsoft, even Sony can do better then this!

Even though the game makers get paid, they still pay the console maker, and they still get a portion I'd think... and I'm sure if the console maker is like "hey we'll make you more money this way, but you have to pay us more money." then I'm sure they will be fine with it.. lol

Custom-Noble
AR15 Their main goal here is to increase profits for them by making people buy new games, and this will work, until someone figures out how to flash their console. Then it's over.

Having the console able to run burnt games wouldn't matter if they did this. You would still need to enter the code that came with the new game you would need to buy.

The money goes to the people who made the game, not the console makers, other than a very small amount which I'm not sure exists.

Here's what I have to say 1. Please stop posting ps3 comments in a xbox conversation 2. I never buy used games because of DLC and special offers. So if this RUMOR were to happen I would not really care but for those of you that do buy games used I am very sorry :'(
