Next-Generation PS4 and Xbox 720 set for $400 price range

4.7
Colin Sebastian of Baird Equity Research has said that the new generation consoles will most likely come in around the $400 price range. This number isn't just a random number he came up with, but is based off-the-record meetings with a "number of companies" at CES 2013.

"Given the fragile state of the console game market, we expect the E3 trade show in June will take on added significance, most likely providing the industry with the first public opportunity to examine next-generation hardware," Sebastian wrote in his notes.

"Our checks suggest that next-generation console hardware will be largely built from 'off the shelf' high-end PC components, along with hybrid physical/digital distribution models, enhanced voice controls and motion sensing (Kinect integration with every Xbox), and broad multi-media capabilities," he added.

"Moreover, a PC-based architecture (Intel chips in the case of Xbox) should have a number of advantages over custom-developed silicon: for one, the learning curve for software developers will be shorter than completely new technology.

"Second, the cost of production and retail price points should be lower than prior console launches."

"Third, it will be easier to build online services around PC chip architecture, including flexible business models (free-to-play, subscriptions) and multi-media (over the top) content offerings. For Microsoft, this design will also allow for more integration with Windows 8 and Windows Mobile devices."

Sebastian has said that the Xbox 720 is expected to release in November, while Sony has had some "early production issues" and the PS4 could be released after the Xbox 720.

bradbrad818 Thats a good price in the beginning they were say 600-700

They would lose alot of sales if they made it cost that much because not everybody has that much.

Dish I may buy it. The 720 of course. But what will happen to my 360 profile?

I hope you can transfer the profiles...

Efficient imo, they should just update the 360. I think it's a little too soon for the 720 and ps4

Yea, I don't want to be forced to buy a new console to update.

It's been long enough for them especially the Xbox 360. Since the next-gen will be coming out soon they can use blu-ray drives and have larger disc capacity (a single-layer blu-ray disc holds 25gb). The games will also perform at levels of high-end PC's when it comes out. What would be nice would be if the new consoles let you upgrade to play at higher performances like PC's do.

they have updated the 360 and ps3,the slims...its overdue for new consoles.their performance vs pcs is lacking way too much and is limiting the developers to too little power to work with.and to the people saying 400 is too much, how do you figure?the kinect bundle with 250 slim is still 400$.also too soon? its been what 7 going on 8 years?

Afghani $400 isn't that expensive.

Yes it is, $400 is crazy. I'm just thankful it isn't more, cause it would still sell like wildfire if it was say $500-$800.
People are very loyal to what console they own.

No it wouldn't,$800 lol no one has even seen or played one yet,you just presume it will be good?
