PlayStation 3 reportedly passes Xbox 360 in worldwide sales

Despite having almost a year long head start on Sony, new research reports have the PlayStation 3 finally taking the lead in the number of consoles shipped worldwide in comparison to the Xbox 360.

According to a Worldwide Video Game Entertainment Console Hardware and Packaged Software 2012-2016 Forecast from the International Data Corporation, which is said to also include the number from December, that show PlayStation creator Sony has finally passed Microsoft in worldwide sales last month (roughly 77 million to 76 million).

While this report does show Sony taking the lead, it is also clear to point out that these numbers are shipped totals and not actually sold to the consumers. Numerous analysts over the years have predicted that Sony would catch Microsoft, so it looks like they might have been right after all.

The forecast also gives mention to Nintendo's future, stating that the company will continue to find sales for their Wii U and projects that they will ship 50 million consoles by 2016.

oh yes no matter what somehow the xbox has to win "oh well the ps3 beeped when being turned on before the xbox 360" jesus time to grow up they are basically the same counsel now.

I love reading these comment sections when Xbox 360 and PS3 are brought up in the same sentence.

I own a Xbox 360, PS3, and a Wii. All are great for their own things.

I prefer the PS3 more though. That $60 a year for XBL doesn't seem to have no more value anymore. 2-3 years ago you could say it did, but now no. Considering the PS3 in my opinion is a way better media device.

mailafatkid its funny at my local walmart they cant even get rid of the wii u's they have major overstock because no one buys them


Wii fell short in almost every way possibe, even Kinect beats the Wii in my opinion so when I see the word "Wii" in a name, I avoid it.
