Sony anti-used game patent leads to GameStop stock plunge

GameStop's stock price dropped six percent on Thursday following reports that new technology patented by Sony could eliminate the pre-owned games market.

The technology - which tags individual game copies with information about previous use - could potentially be used to restrict the use of a game to one machine or user account. This could mean bad news for the US retailer - a major player in the pre-owned market.
The market responded to the news with selloffs of GameStop shares, resulting in the retailer's share prices falling by $1.57 to $24.09.

Michael Pachter of Wedbush Securities moved to appease investors, claiming Sony would be unwise to implement the technology to its full potential. "Sony would be materially hurt if its console blocked used games and competitor consoles from Microsoft and Nintendo did not," Pachter wrote in a note to investors.

"We think the reaction is overblown," he continued. Indeed, SCEA CEO Jack Tretton is reportedly against moves to implement technology designed to block used games.

Elsewhere, an analyst for Janney Capital has noted a similar pattern in the lead up to the PS3's launch.

GBE It is really hard to get a game messed up on PS3, Idk why but I wish Xbox was like that.


None of my games have ever broke for my 360, just be careful with them.


He means how if u pick up the Xbox with a disk in its **** and that doesn't happen with ps3

Ive picked up my xbox with the disc in it plenty of times and nothing happens, Be careful

your attempt at saying xbox has more failures is somewhat funny,im not sure if you saw but a few months ago on here there was a news feed that showed the failure rates of xbox and ps3 had become the same.ps rrod=ylod...


I have more than one Xbox 360. And i have never encounted any problems in terms of hardware apart from the disc tray losing its ability to read discs, but thats after 3 years.I dont know how you could have possibly bought more than 2 xbox 360`s lol. people just dont understand the meaning of ventilation.p.s when you purchased your 7th Xbox (hard to believe, didn`t you think you were maybe doing something slightly wrong.haha


I personally believe that Microsoft purposefully makes it so the Xbox 360, Arcades at least, only last 3 years. Mine is 3 years old, and it just now had the same problem. Check online too. there seems to be the same problem everywhere.

I had the original Xbox for 3 years before it got RRoD.
The had expanded the warranty 5 years for everyone who had that Xbox due to the issues. I got my xbox fixed for free 2 more times, then they sent me a free Arcade.
Never had problems with the Arcade.
Never payed money to have any Xbox fixed either, so I doubt it :P

Jigee This is a great idea... If Sony want's to butt f*** themselves and companies like gamestop.


Gamestop will still make money off of xbox, assuming they are smart enough to not do this.


They will make a lot less, but yes they would still make plenty off xbox.

actually, according to the laws of gyrophysics, it don't matter what system your CD is in, if you tip the system, you're guaranteed to screw up the CD.
