This is How Grand Theft Auto 5 Runs on the Switch

4.3
A cool video online has shown footage of Grand Theft Auto 5 running on the Nintendo Switch, with surprising results. While Rockstar Games released Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition for Nintendo Switch in recent years, its flagship title Grand Theft Auto 5 never made it onto the platform despite huge sales everywhere else.

Despite the game approaching its tenth birthday in the coming months, Grand Theft Auto 5's enduring popularity continues to be massively impressive. Recently, it was revealed in a Take-Two financial report that Grand Theft Auto 5 has sold over 180 million units to date, making it one of the best-selling games ever made. While gamers clamor for its in-development sequel, it seems the community is content with playing Grand Theft Auto 5 for a while yet.

YouTuber Geekerwan released the footage in a video where they turn the Nintendo Switch into a Steam Deck by forcing it to run the Linux operating system. This allows them to then run other PC games, with Grand Theft Auto 5 particularly featured. The results aren't pretty. The console struggles massively to run Grand Theft Auto 5, with the CPU unable to handle the game's open world. They try it at different graphics settings, but it makes little difference. The majority of the footage shows it hovering at around 6 to 8 frames per second, rendering it essentially unplayable. It's possible that an official version of the game that was optimized for the Switch would run have better luck, however.

As well as Grand Theft Auto 5, Geekerwan does also check out the performance of other games not currently on Nintendo Switch such as Devil May Cry 5 and God of War. The results are unfortunately similar, with frame rates never hitting a playable level, even at lower settings. While some of the best open-world games of all time are available on Nintendo Switch, it's interesting to see it struggle to handle a title that was first released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

The performance of Grand Theft Auto 5 on Nintendo Switch could have some potential implications about the possibility of Grand Theft Auto 6 coming to the platform. Although the game has been confirmed to be in development, the platforms that it's planned for haven't yet been confirmed by Rockstar Games. However, if it's struggling to run a decade-old title already, there's every chance the developer decides to skip the console entirely for the sequel. It should be noted that this technically being an emulated version of Grand Theft Auto 5 would negatively impact performance, and Grand Theft Auto 6 on Switch would be optimized specifically for the platform. With rumors suggesting that Grand Theft Auto 6 could arrive as early as 2024, gamers might not have long to wait to see if it comes to the platform.

Grand Theft Auto 5 is available now for PC, PS3, PS4, PS5, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

well, it's been tried out, and a lot of improvements can be made when they're creating the Switch v2
