Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Disc Version May Require A Huge Download

4.3
Dissent is growing around the highly anticipated Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, for, after confirming that the game would have a massive file size of over 140GB on most platforms, an image of the game's box versions seemingly leaked, and these suggest that the disc won't carry the entirety of this data, meaning that players will have to download a decent chunk of it from the internet.

The image, as seen below, appears to come from a New Zealand games retailer called Mighty Ape. The company's logo can be seen in the full image, which was recently shared on Reddit. As always, take this information with a grain of salt, though with that being said, it would be an odd thing for someone to fake, and given that Mighty Ape is a retail company, it does make sense for them to have early access to the game's physical versions.

Though it's rather small and pixelated, you can see on the bottom left of the PlayStation 5 version that the box reads "Download Required." This image has certainly disgruntled some in the gaming community who are very adamant about getting games physically and the benefits that come with that.

Though most agree that getting games digitally is quite convenient for many reasons, physical discs still have their upsides, such as not having to wait for the game to download, the game taking up less space on your console's SSD, and being able to play the game indefinitely regardless of storefront closures. Requiring a download on a game's disc version essentially makes it obsolete, beyond just the appeal of having something physical to collect.

It will still take up a lot of space on your console's SSD, you'll have to wait for the game to download (which can be a huge hassle depending on your internet speed), and, though very situational, if you wanted to play this game in 2055, but the PlayStation 5 digital storefront shut down, you likely wouldn't be able to.

It's worth noting that it's still unclear how much data players that get the disc version will have to download, but it likely won't be a small amount given how large the game is. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 launched last year with essentially no data on the disc, making it function as more of a download key than anything else. This could be a trend that continues to build as consoles attempt to phase out physical versions altogether, given that they result in a slightly smaller profit margin.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor launches on April 28 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Bummer. I really don't like digital ownership... If I were considering the game it could be a deal breaker for me.
