Sony plans to support PS3 through 2015 at least

4.5
Sony isn't abandoning the PS3 any time soon, PlayStation VP of hardware marketing John Koller tells Gamespot.

"We are increasingly bullish on the PS3's prospects not only this year but over the next few years," Koller says. "A lot of great content is coming. And over the next two to three years, the PS3 has got an incredible lineup."

As long as developer interest exists for the PS3, Sony will continue to support it, similar to the PS2, which launched in 2000 and still scoops up a few games each year.

"We're going to continue supporting the PS3 for the next few years. Absolutely. And we're going to continue supporting it not only that long, but as long as there is a development spigot that's running hot," Koller says. "Same thing with PS2... it's kind of stuck around as that old warrior, many years after its launch. But there's still games launching for it."

Sony is launching a super-slim version of the PS3, the console's third design since it hit shelves in 2006. A new, 250GB PS3 runs $270, while the 500GB is $300 – both of these will have to compete with the Xbox 360, which has a $200 option, and the Wii U, Nintendo's new console that starts at $300.

Koller stands by the price of the PS3 redesign, citing the $270 version's full-time bundle package. Consumers want "value," and the new PS3 offers "a $70 consumer value when you get Uncharted 3 Game of the Year... and Dust 514 with $30 extra DLC coming in," Koller says.

I don't think this says that they aren't going to release a new console before 2015.
They are just going to support the ps3 until then. Which technically they still support the ps2. So I think people may be misunderstanding this article.
But I could be wrong...

Consistent They don't really need another playstation right now.

I Thought the PS4 Is going to be released somtime next year or so?

Same here, But I hope the Xbox 720 does this too because I'm not ready to move on to a new console.

Rule34 This is pretty dumb. They're really gonna try to run the same console for 10 years almost? The Wii U is coming out now (2012), and the original Wii came out in like 2006 I think. Nintendo knows what's up.

I think it's a good idea to support it until 2015, then they are surely working on the PS4 more and then the PS4 could be alot better then it could if they bring it out in like 2 years?

WreckTuhm I'm not really surprised, I don't really see any reason they should come out with a new playstation.. It's still pretty up to date with everything, there's not really much of a need for a new one. :)

Up to date? Are you serious?

Games being made these days hold back on the graphics just because of how outdated current consoles' GPUs are. The Xbox and PS3 have been out 6-7 years. Technology changes vastly in just a years time.

been out 6-7 years and people still buy them. no need to change what isnt broken my man.

So you're okay with playing games with graphics that can only achieve the standards of 7 years ago?

Sure they're selling well still, but that is because there are no other consoles that outclass them. (PC not included) Sure you think the graphics are fine now, but you will probably be blown away when a new Xbox or Playstation drops.

Yes. I will probably be blown away by the new consoles but still they continue to sell and I see no reason for upgrading. I just dont get the people who complain about graphics. Does it really matter? Honestly I have both consoles and I play both almost everyday and I find no problems. So what I am trying to say here is yes I am perfectley fine with playing graphics we had achieved 7 years ago.

That is true, It will be the same with the Xbox 360 too, They may (Probably will) just make slim versions and such. Just so they can sell the console again and again....
