Sea Of Thieves has confirmed that Season 8 will launch later this month. The season begins on November 22, and players will be able to get a closer look at the contents of the update through the official Twitch channel live stream at 4 PM Coordinated Universal Time next Friday, November 18.

Along with the content update, the official results of the Return of the Damned two-week battle will be announced. Return of the Damned is a unique competition that allows players to decide whether captain Flameheart — the main antagonist of the game — will be resurrected or not in the upcoming story-related events. Each player must make a choice to ally themselves with two factions that have opposing stances toward Flameheart's resurrection and engage in something akin to capture-the-flag adventures to determine the future of Sea of Thieves' story.

The bad guys' faction, Team Flameheart, is helmed by Servant of the Flame, captain Flameheart's adopted son, and the good guys' faction, Team Pendragon, has the mysterious pirate Belle as its leader. Players have had to follow separate paths (or reap the rewards of both paths) and do the required tasks in each path to signify that they have chosen to side with their favorite faction. Mike Chapman, creative director of Rare, has also confirmed in a recent podcast that after this side challenge, Sea of Thieves will return to focus on PVP again in the upcoming season.

According to Chapman, the team is working hard to create a balance between PVP and PVE, and while he is still being ambiguous about what they have in store for this goal, he teases that there will be different and new ways for PVE and PVP players to interact in the upcoming seasons following Season 8. As for new players who want to keep up with the existing story events, they can check the recently released novel Heart of Fire. It details the rise and fall of Captain Flameheart, and captures the intensity behind the battle for his resurrection.
