Diablo 3, Starcraft 2 and World of Warcraft service compromised

4.8
In a statement posted on the Blizzard website, Mike Morhaime said: "This week, our security team found an unauthorized and illegal access into our internal network here at Blizzard".
Email addresses for global Battle.net users outside of China have been illegally acquired, the CEO revealed.

Answers to users' personal security questions, as well as information relating to mobile and dial-in authenticators, were also compromised. Scrambled Battle.net passwords for players on North American servers were also captured.

"Based on what we currently know, this information alone is not enough for anyone to gain access to Battle.net accounts," Morhaime insisted.

Users are urged to change their passwords. A mandatory change to security questions is in the pipeline.

"At this time, we've found no evidence that financial information such as credit cards, billing addresses, or real names were compromised. Our investigation is ongoing, but so far nothing suggests that these pieces of information have been accessed," Morhaime added.

The unauthorised access has been closed off.

Blizzard did not reveal how many user accounts had been affected. The Battle.net service has registered details of more than ten million users, though the total sum is thought to be far more than this.

The service, used for games such as World of Warcraft, Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2, features Secure Remote Password (SRP) protocols to protect passwords.

Morhaime says the technology is designed to make it "extremely difficult" to extract user passwords.

"It also means that each password would have to be deciphered individually," he said.

"As a precaution, however, we recommend that players on North American servers change their password. Moreover, if you have used the same or similar passwords for other purposes, you may want to consider changing those passwords as well.

"In the coming days, we'll be prompting players on North American servers to change their secret questions and answers through an automated process. Additionally, we'll prompt mobile authenticator users to update their authenticator software.

"We take the security of your personal information very seriously, and we are truly sorry that this has happened."

PUR3SiNGh At the end of the day, PC is still better than the Xbox 360 and PS3. I don't know a single thing that they do better.

You can't just state that PC is better without a valid argument, your saying it like you don't need one, because you obviously do. Xbox is still way better than PC.

Really? guess what your xbox was coded with? a pc. The online component of Xbox was coded with a pc the servers themselves are pcs so ....pcs are better....

That's still an invalid argument. Just because they were made on the PC doesn't automatically make the PC better.

I hope not. It's been a while since Xbox has been "officially" hacked.

It would be much harder to hack Microsoft for they are actaully a computer company that deals in stuff like this all the time. They are much more prepared and secured.

Do you even know what you are talking about? Since you seem so confident, why don't you go ahead and hack Steam, or Origin maybe?

Just because one service for PC got hacked doesn't mean that every other PC service got compromised. Steam which is the most popular service for gaming on the PC has not been breached, Origin has not been breached, GOG has not been breached, OnLive has not been breached, all of those services are just a few on the PC that have not been breached.

I don't get how you Xbox fanboys can be so ignorant, you act like your service is impenetrable. If someone really wanted to get access to Xbox Live they will find a loophole and exploit it. Just because it hasn't happened doesn't mean it won't.

Hold up, I Understand the immensity of your anger, but i was refering to how Everything on the pc is would be easier TO Mod/Hack/Compromise then it would be on The xbox, Everyone knows it maybe not compromise so much but i was referring to modding. Your acting like The Pc is your wife? Calm down there buddy

Just thought i should let you know, xbox.com contains a list of everyone's account name/email and their password, professional hackers and programmers such as.. yes i'll say it, Anonymous and Lulzsec (call me a fanboy /care) they could easily find a loophole into the website and as quoted by DICE- 'exploit it' getting past all security breachings, allowing them access to their servers database containing everyones passwords, i for one hope for the love of god that microsoft aren't that **** and dont save it in a ssl directory ect, cause then thats a fail right there.

As to your chat about modding, thats even easier on xbox, drag the files onto your laptop, gg.

That Annoymous , What cant they do? They are the best of the best, you cant bring them into the convo, I Know xbox modding is easy, pc is however easier, Easy to mod, hack, With one click you can download a cracked and modded game !.
