In early June of 2021, Rockstar announced that they will be shutting down GTA Online servers for PS3 and Xbox 360 at the end of the year. The announcement didn't bring much attention as most players moved on either to PS4 or PS5 in the meantime.
However, PS3 and Xbox were the first consoles for which GTA V was released, and nostalgic players have started posting clips from GTA Online while it roamed on those consoles, before price inflations and the Oppressors - the good old days.
Who would have thought that a game would outlive 2 generations of consoles, and will be releasing an enhanced version for the third, and even maybe for the fourth, who knows?
8 years into the game's life, Rockstar released their possibly biggest DLC, The Contract, featuring Dr. Dre and Franklin, one of the main protagonists.
Their numbers are as good as ever, having more than 2 million players a month with daily averages over 75k for the entirety of 2021.
So the game lives on outside the consoles that it started on.
The company also confirmed that it plans to continue supporting the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions, while they continue to work on the release of the GTA Expanded & Enhanced version for the newest consoles of GTA Online, which is scheduled to release in March next year.
As for the seventh-gen generation, they will be pulling all Social club features down including leaderboards and stat tracking, and will stop selling Shark Cash Cards for the seventh-gen generation of consoles.
