EA has pulled the original Titanfall from sale for good

Electronic Arts has pulled the original Titanfall from sale permanently.

Developer Respawn announced on Wednesday that the game will also be removed from subscription services in March 2022, which will be eight years after its initial release.

While the studio didn’t provide a reason for discontinuing sales of the game, the Titanfall series has been the subject of ongoing DDoS attacks for several years.

“We’ve made the decision to discontinue new sales of the original Titanfall game starting today and we’ll be removing the game from subscription services on March 1, 2022,” Respawn said.

“We will, however, be keeping servers live for the dedicated fanbase still playing and those who own the game and are looking to drop into a match.

“Rest assured, Titanfall is core to Respawn’s DNA and this incredible universe will continue. Today in Titanfall 2 and Apex Legends, and in the future,” the studio added.

“This franchise is the north star for the caliber of experiences we will continue to create here at Respawn.”

Titanfall was Respawn’s critically acclaimed debut game. The studio was established by Jason West and Vince Zampella, who had previously co-founded Infinity Ward and been instrumental in the creation of the Call of Duty franchise.

Partly due to a tough launch window that saw it compete directly with both Call of Duty and Battlefield games, the equally well-received Titanfall 2 “was successful” but “didn’t quite sell as well as it should have”, Zampella said in 2017.

In 2019, Respawn said it had pushed back plans for new Titanfall games so that it could focus on supporting Apex Legends following the free-to-play title’s explosive growth.

EA claimed in April that Apex Legends had topped 100 million players and said last month that the franchise was closing in on $1 billion in net bookings annually.

Last summer, Respawn announced a second studio in Vancouver, which it said would focus on the continued development of Apex Legends.
