Will Call of Duty Ever See a Third Person Shooter, RTS or RPG Game?

While the question may seem far-fetched, it’s starting to be asked by more and more gamers out there. Call of Duty has been the same game for as long as it’s been around, offering the same types of missions, the same multiplayer and so on. However, I’m not here to rag on a formula that works and sells millions of copies every single year. With the next Call of Duty being revealed on May 1st, I’ve been thinking about ways that Activision could change up the series. It might involve releasing more than one game a year under the Call of Duty name, but they could be different and people would still probably buy them.

We know from some prototype footage released that Activision was toying with the idea of a Call of Duty RTS, but unsurprisingly canned the project. I just bought myself my first gaming PC today and with it, I bought Company of Heroes. When looking at some clips of gameplay before I purchased it, I really started thinking about the prototype footage released for that Call of Duty RTS and how similar it looked. Maybe Company of Heroes was the cause for the failure of that game, considering they were both set during World War 2, but I would still love to see a Call of Duty RTS. If done right, it could be an RTS that has the same amount of popularity as the FPS version of the game. Luckily, it wouldn’t be able to become the juggernaut on the PC that it would be on consoles because PC players have a much wider variety of RTS games to play, such as the Total War series, Company of Heroes, Starcraft and so on; all of which have large online communities and very loyal fans.

Sledgehammer was supposedly working on a Third Person adventure Call of Duty before it was canned. Out of all the cancelled Call of Duty projects, that one was my most wanted. We never got any actual details on the game so there’s not much I can speculate on, but if you’ve played the third person modes on Modern Warfare 2, the third person view works pretty well for Call of Duty. I was always hoping they’d maybe install a cover component for the third person view, but of course that never happened. If any of these genres were to be used, I believe a third person shooter from of Call of Duty would probably be the most realistic idea.

Finally, this is the craziest of them all, but I’ve always had a hope we might see an RPG form of Call of Duty. The multiplayer component has some of the most addictive–OK it’s probably the most addictive leveling up system of all time. It’s the perfect formula for an RPG and I could see a Call of Duty game having you in an open world giving you a choice of what type of soldier you’d like to be, such as Spec Ops, Ranger, Task Force and so on. You’d have your customizable weapons/loadouts, choose your team and venture out in an open world taking on missions in all sorts of different locations.

We will probably never see any of these ideas I just presented, but it would really nice to see Activision take a chance in the near future and honestly, I wouldn’t care if they released two Call of Duty games in one year if one of them was a completely different game under the same brand name. What do you think? Will Activision ever take a chance of changing its prized possession? What would you like to see if Activision were to make a Call of Duty game under a different genre. There's that mission in black ops, where you are in the blackbird, and you can order the troops where to go, before going into first person in the battles. If they followed that idea, I would consider going back to call of duty

OmniDesigns The question you need to be asking is:

Will Call of Duty Ever be Realistic?

It's impossible for a game to be realistic, it can have elements of realism but never be realistic. If you think Battlefield 3 is a realistic game, you're so so wrong.

AFC If it was a 3rd person shooter then I would NEVER play it!

Try ghost recon 2 and Splinter cell Conviction and talk to us again

Both awful games.

Anyway I can't see this happening at all. Gamers complain about cod because it never changes but if it changed suddenly like this they would complain about the changes. I know you can never please everyone but this is just a turn for the worst. What's next, a cod mmo?

Agreed 100%,i hear people everywhere ranting about Call of duty games being the same again and again, but when MW2 tried to spice up call of duty, everyone complained again.

I agree - Call of Duty is Call of Duty because of it's fast pace, first person shooter game style. Suddenly introducing a third person Call of Duty will really shock people and I think that many people wont like it.
