First Mass Effect 3 space trips end up in the trees

4.6
It sounded like a good idea at the time. Developer BioWare and publisher Electronic Arts wanted to give a few fans a chance to get the long awaited sci-fi RPG Mass Effect 3 earlier than its scheduled March 6 release date.

The plan? Launch copies of the game into "space" via a high altitude balloon in several locations around the world. Fans could track the balloons' progress on the Mass Effect web site and if they were the first to retrieve the balloon when it landed they could keep the game.

Those plans got off to a shaky start on Thursday when EA released two balloons with copies of Mass Effect 3 from San Francisco. As reported by G4TV.com, the balloons made landfall later on Thursday in two rural and awkward locations south of the city. One landed in the high branches of a redwood tree while the other is reportedly on an inaccessible cliff.

BioWare was clearly afraid someone might try to get the Mass Effect 3 copies at the expense of their own lives. In a Twitter message from BioWare's David Silverman, he stated, "Balloon 1 is on a cliff somewhere or on top of a Redwood. Please do not kill yourself for these."

Today, another balloon took off from Las Vegas and has apparently landed somewhere in the desert south of the city. The official Mass Effect Twitter page has been keeping track and as of the writing of this post it looks like this package will in fact be retrieved by someone.

Tomorrow, two balloons with a Mass Effect 3 game package will launch in New York City, followed by two more from London on Monday and another two balloons in Berlin on Wednesday.

xsuperxsmashx Bioware are a bunch of ******, only did it that way so they get publicity for the game. They will sell millions of copies yet they only release 2 copies from each city ?? thats just lame and the first 2 copies are already unreachable hmmmmmmmmmm.

Right...complain that they aren't giving out more free games b/c you wont get one. Makes sense.

Im not complaining about getting a free game, im not going to buy it anyway. What im saying is for a company that will make millions off this game to only give away like 10 copies in such a stupid way is pointless. The odds of someone actually getting one of these free copies are ****. And its not actually free unless it lands in your back garden where you dont spend anything going to get it.

What do you expect them to do before the game comes out, launch a million copies? The fact that they are even doing ten is remarkable to me. The intellect of this one shines bright. *cough* ****

Again, another ****. For a company that has made millions to launch roughly $500 worth of games is nothing to them. As the post proves two have landed in awkward places, one of which is an inaccessible cliff, so what are the chances of someone getting one of the other 8?. Why not release say 50 - to 100 copies if they really care about their fans?

Again, complaining about a developer giving stuff away for free. The fact that they even are doing something shows they care about the fans. How many other companies last year gave out free, early releases for a game? You don't think they spent money to market this either? If you're not even buying it why are you reading about it, let alone commenting? There's no point in calling you dumb, cause I doubt you would accept it. I'll just stick with you're a whiny, spoiled child.

Please point out where i was complaining about a developer giving stuff away for free, im complaining about the way they hyped up sending the games into space and then you realise its only 10 games. Not that many companies give out free games before their release date because they know they would get people banned for playing the games early, instead they donate their money to charities like call of duty did that charity weekend thing. As for marketing of course they spend money, not a lot though, they rely on half wits like you, who believe they are doing something good for their fans. They spent about $1000 max just sending these balloons into space with the games and trackers. They sent 10 games and to find out where these balloons landed you have to go on erm oh yeah the BIOWARE WEBSITE oh so they give away 10 games in return they get thousands of people go onto their website and thus everything to do with bioware gets promoted. So tell me who is actually benefitting more from this whole space launch ??? 8 fans or Bioware getting **** load of promotion for nothing!!

How did I know CoD would find its way into this conversation? Im done trying to reason with you. Clearly It's a waste of time trying to get through that thick skull.

All you have done is dodge my questions. You're grammar is terrible, you make no sense. You illiterate dick. You ask me to find other companies that give away games and other stuff for free and when i do you complain.
