Treyarch on Tweaks for Black Ops and “Next” Call of Duty

4
Call of Duty: Black Ops Developer, David Vonderhaar, has been rather active on the official Black Ops forums lately searching for feedback on various gameplay and balance matters.

One question we are asking is if this feedback is to be used to improve Black Ops, or will it be factored into their next title, be it Black Ops 2 or something completely different. So far, we’ve already seen some major changes to Black Ops gameplay fairly late into it’s life, including weapon balancing, playlists, and perks like Last Stand. It would not be crazy to assume more changes are on their way, but meanwhile, we can begin to get a general idea of the direction Treyarch might be headed in with their next project. For now, you should check out the Unofficial Feedback Thread and Unofficial Knife Feedback Thread that Vonderhaar has set up to gather feedback.

Vonderhaar has stressed that he’s reading all comments on these threads, so it would be a great place to have your voice heard.

Many fans have been showing appreciation for Treyarch’s willingness to learn and implement new improvements/ideas into Black Ops. Vonderhaar mentions that “You have to challenge assumptions. I don’t want to change just because we could. Finding the right things is important.” Treyarch recently implemented the option to turn aim assist for consoles in the multiplayer and was asked if there were any plans to create playlists that enforce this feature. Vonderhaar states, “yes. It could be enforced at a playlist level. Not sure how popular it would be, but am thinking of a way to deal with that.” One of the more controversial ideas that Vonderhaar has been looking for feedback on is the ability to unlock weapons permanently through prestiging. “We have these ‘traditions’ of doing things a certain way. Prestige relocking gameplay content being one.” Perhaps it’s time to break these traditions in order for Call of Duty to really move forward. In response to one fan stating that all of these changes could have been tested earlier in a Beta, had they implemented one, Vonderhaar noted that “it would be ridiculously beneficial to be able to test out this stuff now in black ops so its perfect for the ‘next game.’”

It seems we live in a day and age when it’s more and more acceptable for games with a strong multiplayer community like Call of Duty to be tweaked and changed, days, months, or years after release. Do you agree with this dynamic way of updating games, or should they be “perfect” from the get-go. Also, what would you like to see in the “next” Call of Duty?

-Konviict- I personally like Infinity Ward (and now Sledgehammer Games) better than Treyarch, but Black Ops introduced a lot of new material to the franchise, and MW3 got rid of a lot of this stuff. I like ranking up weapons more than having to buy upgrades for your gun, but wager matches, the playercard, colored clan tag, and customizing your emblem should've been brought back to MW3. And also, it took Black Ops 11 or 12 title updates to fix most of the glitches/hacks, and MW2 only took 7 title updates, meaning Black Ops had more glitches/hacks in it, or they couldn't patch as much glitches in their title updates like MW2 did. All in all, MW3 and Black Ops are about equal to me

Your point about the amount of glitches being relevant to the amount of updates is completely irrelevant.
When there was a new glitch or exploit found in Black Ops, Treyarch came down on it fast and quick, thus there being a title update. The rock glitch on Fuel for MW2 was still about halfway through the life-span of Black Ops, so that's over a year without it being patched. For all I know it's possibly still there.
Plus there was a new title update for every map pack, seeing as there were 4 map packs on Black Ops and only 2 on MW2 that would account for two extra straight away.

To me, MW3 is nothing but a "booster pack" for MW2. And them getting rid of a lot of the great features that Black Ops brought along to the table was a dumb-as-**** idea in my opinion.

Tactic Since JD2020 isn't community manager anymore, I will probably go to Black Ops to see what they changed. I like there idea on keeping things through prestiging like what they did in MW3 in the prestige shop.
lol my gamertag is bigmatt2020 thats funny as hell (:

WPSpy why are people saying black ops sucked. It was amazing! they were the first call of duty to actually give a s*** about their multiplayer. as soon as there was a problem, they patched it (sometimes even before you knew it exist). they did their best to balance the game, which i thought they did a good job at (however some people disagree).. The maps also felt like they played better. Not only that, they added sooo many features (theatre, currency, combat cards, etc.).. I guess it all depends on your play style.. some people find Infinity Ward the superior cod creators, however im now a Treyarch fan.. I hope to see a Black Ops 2 or something close
blacks ops was the worst cod ever

wrong. cod3 was. anything after cod waw is a joke and will always be a joke.

Rozy Black ops was a great game, some may disagree.I believe people hated on black ops because it tested gamer's skill level in a different way and gamers were not use to it. People who hate on black ops seem to have just been bad overall at it and didn't know who to blame but the game.

2.00+ k/d, i aint bad, got 100+ kills almost every single game with my friends, and i grew to hate that game a lot. so your logic of just bad players hating on it is wrong. the only credit i give black ops for being good is zombies, face it, no one can hate on zombies, there just awesome :)

I could say that two, post proof
