Five years after releasing and immediately taking the world by storm, Rocket League is set to switch to a free-to-play model. The hybrid soccar game has been an unmitigated success since launch but has recently been making some changes. Last year, the team at Psyonix was acquired by Epic Games. The game has also ditched their old loot box system and dropped Mac and Linux support as they overhauled the game’s base systems. So, considering how many changes have happened over the last year this move isn’t too surprising.
📣📣📣 Announcement time: Rocket League is going free to play later this summer. Check out the details in our latest blog, and get ready for lots of news throughout the next few weeks!https://t.co/h1hqtWY9kp pic.twitter.com/HQsc7f7kVL

Of course, Rocket League fans who purchased the game prior to this announcement have a few things to look forward to as the gates are opened for everyone with hard drive space. They’ll get all of the “Rocket League-branded DLC” for free, along with several new cosmetic options. Plus, Psyonix is introducing cross-platform progression with the new update. So, now you can pick up the game wherever you choose and continue moving your career forward.
However, it’s not all rosy news in Rocket League land. Alongside the big change, the team is taking the game off of Steam for new players. You can still play it if you already own it before they make the switch, but new PC players will have to go to the Epic Game Store to get their soccar fix. It’s news that is sure to ruffle quite a few feathers; however, it’s a bit surprising they’ve taken this long after Epic bought the company last year.
There isn’t a firm release date for the free-to-play update. All we know for now is that it’s coming this summer. Expect news to drop over the next few weeks with further updates.
Rocket League is available now on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
