EVO confirms Tekken 7’s Solid Snake ‘reveal’ was a little joke

Fighting game competition EVO 2019 has just wrapped and though a sort-of tease during the event seemed to suggest that Solid Snake from the Metal Gear series might be heading to Tekken 7, it looks like it’s not to be. The event’s official Twitter account has now confirmed that it wasn’t a character reveal, so it looks like Snake won’t be coming to the seventh King of Iron Fist tournament’s roster.

During EVO 2019, a video shown to attendees (via IGN) at the Mandalay Bay stage just before the Grand Finals of the Tekken 7 competition seemed to show Solid Snake’s picture with some audio from his codec radio accompanying it. This caused some to conclude that Snake might potentially be heading to the game, perhaps in DLC. However, EVO has now confirmed that the video was a “joke.”

The tweet says “just to clear things up, the Snake cameo video that we showed during Tekken finals was our idea of a little joke. It was not intended to imply a character reveal, and was done on our own, without consulting Bandai Namco. Sorry for any confusion!”

A little joke is funny at times.

David Hayter (voice actor of Snake) was actually quite upset and rather annoyed at this. He does Cameo videos for people and that's where that meme about "Snake being too dummy thicc" started, was from someone paying him on Cameo and him recording a voice. Someone had paid him to say that for Tekken - not sure when - and then EVO went and used it as a joke. Poor taste to do so, both because David Hayter has a legit proper reason to get annoyed with it and even mentioned it on his Twitter. No one consulted him for this or even Konami, which I'm sure he got a bunch of tweets asking for more information about Snake being in Tekken and since he had heard nothing about it until now, could easily make him go into a "slight" panic mode that Konami just decided to not say anything and cause a whole mess. This would not be a first within the gaming industry that devs, VAs, artist or whomever are not notified and/or are told as last minute as it gets, so it's a very reasonable response if that's what went through his mind. Second, EVO should know better. A very loud and I would argue a good majority fans over at EVO are legit spoiled and feel entitled about everything "boycott EVO for no Smash Melee" "Boycott Street Fighter 5 because of shitty looking skins leaked" and there's plenty of other instances. EVO went and fed that fan base's narrative/stereotype because there are some people who are going to feel they're owed Snake now since it was mentioned and because of the fact that David Hayter even recorded him mentioning Tekken from someone paying for it. I get it was a joke, but given EVO's history of it's attendees, it was just stupid and tone-deaf. I mean for god sake, 5-6 months ago someone legit brought a goat, a GOAT ANIMAL, to EVO parading it around on his shoulder, dressed up as shepherd/herder and some even said Jesus, got kicked out and some people were calling it unfair to do so.
