Google Stadia Will Require 25 MB/s Internet Connection to Run 1080p

Google are banking hard on the power of the cloud with their upcoming streaming-only platform, Stadia. Their server stacks are touting some impressive specs, with 4K and 60 FPS support right off the bat- but the question, of course, is how good of an internet connection do you need to run that stuff? Pretty good.

Speaking to Kotaku, Google Stadia boss Phil Harrison confirmed that the platform recommends a connection of 25 megabits per second if you want to run games at 1080p resolutions at 60 frames per second, while if you want the resolution kicked up to 4K, a 30 megabits per second connection is recommended.

“We were able to test a lot of this with our Project Stream test late last year, starting back in October,” said Harrison. “To get 1080p, 60 frames per second, required approximately 25 megabits per second. In fact, we use less than that, but that’s where we put our recommended limit at.”

“But with innovations that we’ve made on the streamer side and on the compression side since then, when we launch, we will be able to get to 4K but only raise that bandwidth to about 30 megabits per second,” he continued. “So if you have less bandwidth, we’ll give you a lower resolution… We do a lot of that for you in the background, and we will only offer up the appropriate bandwidth for the infrastructure that you have.”

How well Google manages to make good on its promises is something that remains to be seen. Stadia launches in the UK, US, Europe, and Canada this year, while more information on the platform (presumably about its pricing and an exact release date) have been promised for this Summer.
