Halo 4 Won’t Touch Core Mechanics of the Game

4.6
The next Halo game will feature both "dramatic innovations" and "slight tweaks" to the traditional Halo format - but new studio 343 Industries doesn't think the core game mechanic needs to be changed.

Speaking to CVG, creative director of MS's 343 Industries - and former CVG employee - Frank O'Connor said he doesn't think the Halo series needs to be taken in a radical new direction... it just needs to go "deeper".

"Bungie tried to reinvent [the Halo series] every time," he told CVG. "If you think about it, with Halo it was about putting the controls on the sticks, which hadn't been solved properly.

"With Halo 2 we recreated the System Link, LAN party experience on Xbox Live and that wouldn't have happened if it hadn't been on Xbox... So there are a lot of things that comes from partnership with the hardware and platform guys, and a lot of innovations come through necessity, which is going to continue to happen with us.

"Ultimately the core game mechanic and strength of the universe doesn't need to be changed, it just needs to be taken deeper. We want to make Halo games - we don't want to make Call of Duty or Ridge Racer. We want to make Halo games because we understand what's special about Halo."

Despite the fact that the next Halo will be the fourth on the current Xbox hardware, O'Conner said he doesn't think it'll be a problem producing another innovative instalment.

"I would say that one thing that has happened with previous Halo games regardless of hardware or platform shift is that there were always ideas left on the table due to time constraints, there were also ideas that didn't quite work because people didn't take to them or audience player patterns weren't exactly what we expected," he said.

"So no matter when it comes out, the next Halo is going to contain improvements. Some of them are going to be dramatic innovations while others will be slight tweaks.

"You've got to say 'what can we do to make this better?' It doesn't matter if that is a giant innovation or a small tweak, you've got to do it all over the board. That's how Bungie approaches it."

In the same interview O'Conner told CVG he thinks the next Halo will be "scrutinised differently" without Bungie at the helm.

i love all the campaigns for halo there the only reason why i buy them i'm not a fan of there multiplier so i hop they put most of there time in making more great campaigns and hopefully they will be longer. if they can do that every year im cool with that and if they cant then they should go back to the way they have been doing it, i don't mind the wait. :)

kingkottah I sure hope halo doesnt became a yearly release, thats what made it special is that they took their time making their games as perfect as possible. If they keep at the normal rate of pushing out halo games it will be like halo 5 and cod would be like COD12 which is crazy seeming halo franchise started first (i believe)

I agree,

The thing that annoys me is that they said they would stop at halo 3 and then make a CE version.

Where's the CE Version?!?
Now there making crappier and crappier versions that cant keep your attention after you complete the storyline.

Fix the core mechanics, they need fixing.
thats why no one plays on it.

A lot of people still play halo 3, and halo reach.

The games haven't gotten crappier and crappier each time, people just expect more and more from new games. Halo 3 added a lot more features than halo 2 had and some people loved it, some people loved halo 2 more. The reason being is that people got used to halo 2 so they didn't want to learn how to play a new game.

As for me I hope they don't make a new halo game every year.

yeah I hate that, COD 7 for examples hear the game just because they took away quick scoping, they seem to complain about the smallest tweaks added in to a sequel. I thought Halo Reach was an excellent game due to the fact that it had different and unique feel than the other games.

-L96A1- Halo needs to do Halo. If people start pushing halo to be Call of Duty, then they will start hiring trash companies, like Treyarch, to make their games faster. I want halo to be as well designed as it has been for, well, the whole series! I can wait a two or three years for a halo, but they need to stop getting side projects started, then stopping. Just get the main game done. Because that's what WE want, and WE the customers, should matter the most.
I thought Black Ops was pretty freaking sweet I guess you think it sucks because your no good at multiplayer :)

lol yea soo realisitic, dogs and rc-xd incoming???? no....

lol

dogs were used in the olden day wars and everything in the game is base on real products therefore rc-xd cars would of been used

You're an idiot.
RC-XD's were not used in any war. Boy, they weren't even invented. Also, not everything is based on real products, what army uses or has ever used perks? Or to run around a battle field capturing flags?

Do your research before you post crap.
Or just plain have some common sense.

royceunion7 this game is better be good becuase after every one got bored of halo 3 thats when halo was basically over! ODST WAS THE **** WORST GAME I HAVE EVER PLAYED!! im glad that i didnt buy that **** or i would have blown my brains out for wasting 60$ and halo reach was a pretty much turd on the ferris wheel cuz that game was also shitty

Lol, someone's mad :p
Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2 were massive games. They started the whole thing, the thing that all Halo fans loved. Halo 3 improved upon it, introducing new features and better gameplay. Halo 3: ODST should have been like a $30 add on to Halo 3, but imo, it was still a good and fun game. Plus it introduced firefight. Halo: Reach went back in time to show you a bit of background story to the war against the covenant and the Humans, and how the Spartans died. It also included firefight, "classes" that you can choose from, special abilities, and tons of new forge features. Each game brought something new to the series, and many people love the games, so think before you make yourself look like an asshole.

And all of that was coming from someone who prefers CoD over Halo.
