Lol that cinema bit made me laugh. The thing is, if someone said to me oh well if you were offered 80k a week as opposed to like 40k from a prem league club where you'll actually play I'd take the latter.

I have a pro footballer mate who's just signed for Montreal Impact - and we often discussed this. He always said when you love football that much, and you're getting paid ridiculous sums of money to play it, the difference in salary shouldn't matter, and for him he would always pick somewhere he'd play over somewhere he'd get paid to warm the bench. I admit, this could be him trying to sound passionate and not a greedy bastard, but i honestly think i'd rather get played and get paid than get paid more and get no minutes.

at least your mates head is in the right place. Too many young players are just after money now, some aren't even passionate about the game they just want to make as much money as possible.

I have a similar mate who plays for Burnleys youth and has caps for England u18s, he had a chance to go to Man City because they tried buying him but he turned it down because he knew there was a chance of destroying his career despite them offering him 3-4x what he makes now

Apparently, QPR have been offered Alex Pato; wow how his career has crumbled.

Shame how much of a toll injuries can take

had so much potential a few years ago, he seems to be getting worse with age.

QPR could be his turning point if they can keep him fit

The thing is though , I can understand it to a certain extent , I knoe there is a difference beetween "Normal" careers and football , But people are very rarely in jobs that they enjoy they go to the one with the most money and for us "Normal" people to say they would take the lower offer is a bit hypocritical , But as most of us are earning say 20-50k a year then to us thinking about you would say "Id take the lower amount to play"- Because the lower amount is what youd be earning in a year at another job.

For some footballers thats all they know for example this guy , At 16 he was being scouted by everyone and the money (Even for other clubs they must of been offering upwards of 10-20k a week)

The second thing is your saying id take a 40k pay cut per week to play , When we are talking now its fine to say that but when your in that situation crunching numbers - 40K a week less is 1.6M+ difference in a year which is crazy.

Honestly if i was him , Id probbally take the 80K im not going to lie , He has all the power so id try wait it out and ensure that either i have chances at RM (He will play in the RM B team which is still good opportunity) or wait for a team to offer simular wages (He has age on his side) but id take that , Ensure i have a decent house , Ensure all my family members have houses paid off + ensure there all bill free etc but ensure that no matter what i could live my life carefree money wise (And family wise) and that could be done in one year on his wages (3.6M a year) and then if you have a career ending injury when your 17-18 your fine for life , If not then you go to a decent club where you want to play on a decent wage (Even if its around 50-60k) and become a ledgend at that club.

One reason footballers are on so much is there careers are short - Most people work till 65-70 , Footballers are usually coming to the end of the careers at around 30-35

Again you're right but my point is that either way he'll be earning a gargantuan salary. Say (for simplicity) the average middle aged adult (lets call him Dave) gets 20k a year. Now say Odergaard took 40k a week - with 52 weeks in a year he will be earning 104x what Dave earns. Now lets say Odergaard plays for 20 years (with no salary change, which it would usually rise with age as you know). With those 20 years he will earn 20,080x what Dave earns, meaning Dave would have to live (and work) 20,080 years until he earns what Martin earns in his career. Meaning I don't think Mr. Odergaard will suffer too greatly from that pay cut if he wants to play regularly.

Agree with your point but it's a different situation when you consider the very real risk of him not living up to his expectations (again, use the example of Freddy Adu). An 80k a week salary offers a lot more financial security in the event that he turns out to disappoint/gets a big injury. I know it's not something that plays on fans' minds but I can't help but feel that players have to prepare for the scenario

I agree with you the salaraly is incredible - Even 10k a week is insane and he is getting 8 x that.

But also when your earning 20k your alot more sensible with your money , When your 16 and earning 80k as i said youd be spending riduclas money on cars , Houses , Friends and nights out when he gets 18 ofc .

Like some of these footballers can spend 50k + in one night out and that can become a habbit and sometimes you have to keep up with the "Footballers lifestyle" , Personally as i said if i was given that opportunity id sort out mine and my family (And a few friends if was earning 80k+) lives , Get them all secure and only then start spending on some nice cars , Nights out etc.

Im not saying he should be getting 80k , But im just saying thats all he is going to know now and again i d take it to ensure if i got a injury as a young player im sorted for life.

If you lose tonight, I think the entire United fanbase will rage quit the internet for a few days
