I have two build ideas made, and I would like some advice on which of the two builds is a better deal.

I don't know much about PCs, but what I'm aiming for is a build that I won't need to upgrade for a while.
Both builds have the 1660 super which is just a placeholder right now until something better becomes availible.

I heard somewhere that Ryzen 5 3600 doesn't over clock, and someone else told me that it does. Could you clear that up for me also?

Any advice, or any tweaks you would make to the builds would be greatly appreciated

The 3600 turbos up to 4.2ghz which is plenty.

I personally would have and always have stayed away from overclocking CPUs

I haven't actually checked the parts but with the 3600 so long as you have a decent RAM speed you're all good.

You say 1660 is a placeholder but I'd definitely hold out for a 3060 (end of Feb) if you can get ahold of one or look to pick up a 3070 as soon as stocks allow it.

I've noticed you can get them from overclockers almost daily now so that's something worth looking at.

I've just had a look at the builds.

I'd say the 3600 is the better option, as I said with a 3070.

As for a windows key, I'd get one online, I know they can be had for a fraction of the price $20 or so.

The cooler with the ryzens is not a necessity, I run a 3600x on the AMD cooler and it runs sweet.

That takes me to the fact I now see you're from the states, I'm not sure what stocks are like for yourselves.

There's a YouTube video out there of a $1k Ryzen 5 3600 / 3070 build and it looks very 'future proof' obviously the video was made pre-stock issues but it's made me want to upgrade from my 2060 to a 3070

Edit - YouTube video I mentioned youtu.be/2tYim2XRT-M

Definitely a couple things on both lists that i would change.

Firstly I would look into getting a B550 that will give you room to upgrade in the future if you wanted to go to the Ryzen 5000 series. You can get a B550 for roughly the same cost.
Secondly instead of the WD blue you can get a Samsung 970 Evo now a days for a bit cheaper 59.99 for 500GB, and i believe 79.99 for the 1TB. Runs fasters than the blue. Then you can probably just go ahead since you cut some cost off the m.2 and grab a seagate 4TB.

You can also grab a Ryzen 3700x for 20-30 more bucks now instead of the 2nd gen Ryzen.

Other than that I think you have a pretty solid budget build.

Whoever told you that is wrong. All Ryzen CPU's are unlocked. Any Ryzen 3 - Ryzen 9 CPU can be overclocked.

Not a good one. A decent B550 mobo is $150-160, so still a little more expensive than B450.

So will B450.

Where are you seeing a 1TB 970 EVO for $80? The Samsung 970 EVO is absolutely not cheaper than a WD SN550.

OP - Definitely don't pay $250-300 for a 2700X. I'd take an R5 3600(X) over the 2700X anyway since you'll have better per thread performance on the 3600(x) and multithread performance will be similar(for the most part).

B450 Tomahawk MAX>Asus B450 TUF.

Definitely drop the Corsair H60, it's a useless waste of money.

Corsair RGB RAM looks better than the G.Skill stuff, but both are horrendously overpriced at $100 for 16GB. Not much more than that will get you a 32GB kit of non RGB stuff.

Don't pay $100+ for your OS. Use it for free, or buy a cheap key elsewhere.

Corsair iCUE 465x is way overpriced at $120, never mind $150. If you really want a Corsair case, get the 4000D Airflow and add your own RGB fans. I'd be looking at something from Phanteks, Fractal, Lian-Li, or a few other brands before I'd consider Corsair though tbh.

Lastly, the PSU, I'm not actually sure about the EVGA "GA". After the G3, EVGA went nuts with their naming scheme so I don't know anything about the GA.

PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor ($194.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX ATX AM4 Motherboard ($124.99 @ Amazon)
Memory: Kingston HyperX Fury RGB 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 CL15 Memory ($83.99 @ Best Buy)
Storage: Sabrent Rocket Q 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive ($109.98 @ Amazon)
Case: Corsair 4000D Airflow ATX Mid Tower Case ($94.99 @ Amazon)
Power Supply: EVGA G3 550 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply ($89.95 @ Amazon)
Total: $698.89

Add whatever capacity 7200RPM HDD you want/need. Add your RGB case fans if you want some- Lian-Li UNI fans are your best shout for RGB fans IMHO. Or you could just save some money, buy a Phanteks P400A with the RGB fans included for the same price as the 4000D Airflow without RGB fans.
