If I pre-order a game does the money get taken outta my account then? or when the game is released?

If you are using microsoft account credit it will be right away, if not and you are using a credit card then right before the game is released.

I usually pre order from Amazon and I get billed the day of release.

If you are talking about from the xbox store it can be taken right away from when you pre order the game, all the way up till the game goes gold i believe, sometimes it can be closer to the release date
