You should be completely fine with 8gb of ram as that's what I use and I haven't noticed any problems even when having a fair amount of programs open although you could always upgrade to 16gb in the future but if your tight on money at the moment then it's not necessary for gaming. Games making use of 8gb of ram sounds a little extreme to me but I could be completely wrong, someone else will probably be able to verify that.

An SSD would probably be a better investment in the future, I don't own one myself but I have heard they can make a pretty significant difference in boot times and reading/writing to files.

It depends on what your full budget is for upgrades.

If you have enough to spend I would sell your 970 and pick up a 1070 instead.

8GB of ram is perfect and there is no need to upgrade to 16.

Woah wait, what? Have you not built this system yet?

If you were suggested this rig more than a month ago, ignore it completely. The GTX 970 makes no sense any more. Get an RX 480 when they release, or just go for a GTX 1070 instead. I personally, wouldn't recommend 4GB DIMMs any more, for RAM.

Grab an aftermarket RX 480 when they release, around June 29th. £210 should be more than enough for a 480 when they release, you may be able to even opt for the 8GB variant of the 480 if it's not too much more expensive than the 4GB variant.

Yeah, it's fine, just ugly. You could probably buy a heatsink for them though if you really wanted. RAM prices have dropped significantly and you can find deals like these now and again. May be gone soon though so might want to jump on it.
