I am trying to build a PC in the ~$700 range and am torn between these two processors. The build will be mainly a productivity PC. Programming, video editing/rendering, light to moderate gaming, streaming from Xbox One w/ elgato, etc.

The Xeon has 4C/8T @ 3.4GHz ($245.99) whereas the i5 has 4C/4T @ 3.2GHz ($199.98), both to my knowledge can be overclocked (i5 with a Z170 board and BIOS update), however if I were to overclock, it would not be for a while down the road. All comments welcome!!

Personally my money would be on the Xeon for the extra threads.

For what you're looking to do on a PC, I would definitely take the Xeon however I dont think the Xeon can be overclocked on Z97 correct me if I'm wrong.

The Xeon should be the one you go for, but you cannot overclock Xeon's on Z97, you can tweak the base clock, but in the real world all that does is up the temps. In rendering tasks the Xeon will annihilate the i5 even when it is overclocked. The extra threads will help you no-end for the things you want to do.
