I am currently running a R9270X I'm happy with what it can do but I'm thinking of buying a better one, my friend suggested a GTX970 (Either the MSI or ASUS) but I don't know if its worth it, any suggestions on the 970 or any other recommended graphics cards?

You've answered your own question.

Don't upgrade unless you think its necessary if what you have fulfills your needs no point in upgrading.

However the 970 is a great card and a good counterpart to also consider is the R9 390.

If you have money spare save it or spend it on something you really need/want
