"A Russian jet has been shot down after allegedly violating Turkish airspace near the Syrian border.

The pilot was warned 10 times before being shot down by two Turkish F16 jets, according to the country's military.

An official said two planes approached the Turkish border and were warned before one of them was shot down, adding their information shows Turkish airspace was repeatedly violated.

However, Russia's defence ministry has said the Sukhoi Su-24 jet did not violate Turkish airspace, the RIA news agency said.

According to Interfax, the ministry also said the pilots managed to parachute out, but their fate is unclear.

The ministry said in a statement: "We are looking into the circumstance of the crash of the Russian jet.

"The ministry of defense would like to stress that the plane was over the Syrian territory throughout the flight."

TV footage broadcast in Turkey showed a plane going down in flames in a woodland area, with a long plume of smoke trailing behind it.

The warplane went down in an area known by Turks as "Turkmen Mountain" in northern Syria near the Turkish border, private broadcaster Haberturk said.

Separate footage from the country's Anadolu Agency showed two pilots ejecting from the jet before it crashed.

One of the pilots is in the hands of Turkmen forces in northern Syria, CCN Turk said, citing local sources.

A statement from Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu's office said the leader spoke with Turkey's military chief and foreign ministry about the incident.

It added Mr Davutoglu would start "initiatives" within NATO and the United Nations."

UPDATE

"The anger was written on Vladimir Putins face as he confirmed the news Tuesday that a Russian Su-24 warplane had indeed been shot down by a Turkish F-16and not, as Russias defense ministry initially indicated, by ground fire from Syrian fighters. The Russian jet was inside Syria, one kilometer from the Turkish border, when it was hit, the Russian president said in televised remarks from Sochi.

In any case, our pilotsour planein no way threatened the Turkish Republic, Putin said. The warplane was carrying out a mission to hunt down Russian volunteers fighting with ISIS, which was the primary goal of Russias nearly two-month air campaign in Syria, according to the Russian president. He warned of serious consequences for Turkeys stab in the back.

If anything is clear, its that Putin was genuinely surprised by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogans temerity to make good on threats made after Russian warplanes violated Turkeys airspace twice in early October. Erdogan insists the Su-24 repeatedly flew over Turkish territory and ignored 10 warnings before it was shot down. Just on Friday, the Turkish government protested that Russian airstrikes in the area were killing ethnic Turkmens, not terrorists.

For Putin, the Russian jet is the third downed plane to warn of the unintended consequences of armed intervention in a little more than a year.

Funny Turkey does things like this when they're constantly violating Syria's airspace.

Don't know what the Turks were doing here, then again they have an "ISIS loving" government so this was always a risk.

As Miss pointed out Turkish planes are violating Syrian airspace along with everyone else, accept Russia and the Syrian airforce themselves.

Turkey will be the first item on Putin's Christmas dinner list

Al-Capone wrote Stupid Turks. Why on Earth would they do that.

Because their airspace was violated.
I'd expect just about anyone to get shot out of the sky after violating someone's airspace multiple times after numerous warnings.

"Even if the plane was in their (Syrian) airspace for a few seconds, that is no excuse to attack. It was clear that this plane was not an aggressive plane. Still it was shot down." - Tayyip Erdogan 2012

What I find odd as well, is that they say they warned them 10 times within five minutes. But at the same time they're saying the incursion only lasted 17 seconds...

If you caught someone peeping on your daughter via a camera he had placed in her room, wouldn't you beat the shit out of him even though he wasn't acting aggressively towards her?
