Hello, I have a Compaq Presario CQ60 running Windows 7 64-bit. I've gotten a message saying my hard drive is failing and I need to replace it. I want an external hard drive for personal reasons, so my question is, can I somehow make a 1TB external hard drive boot up and load windows 7 as I normally do? If not, how can I get a new hard drive and make it properly load Windows 7? Please help, if you need any other info please ask.

You want to boot windows from a USB HDD?
Yeah good luck with that.
I'd get a 60GB SSD for the OS and use the external for all my files.
Also, when did it say it was failing? Coz i never knew they done that.

He may have a Enterprise version of Windows 7, I know at my work, we are on Windows 8.1 Enterprise and the kids computer next to me told him he needed to replace it as it was failing.

I have a bootable USB, but I've gotten an external hard drive and it is recognized as removable and I can't install Windows on it. Is there a way I can change it to a local disk?

Yes but I cant create any partitions on it and install windows via installtion disk or usb

You could try looking up how to make a live file system as that is what I believe you are trying to do or at least be the only way to accomplish what you want to do, But I think the last supported OS for that was XP.

Using a external USB isn't possible as far as I know, not sure why you just don't buy a cheap SSD just for the OS and then use the external for files and programs.
