Made another landscape, just playing around and teaching myself more about low poly. This one is rendered out in 4k resolution.

Is this as time consuming as it is in illustrator with low poly

No its not.
You simply lower the poly count. The most time consuming part is the lights and textures.

Much more of a sense of achievement doing it by hand.

Thats because of the attention to detail. I should be doing the complete finishing touches to mine today and touch everything up that I dont like. It's taken me a long time to finish I keep seeing something I dont like and I go over that entire spot

Not quite. It's removing the phong tag and brushing all of the landscape on a 3d canvas into what you desire. I am simply using planes here and using my asus vivotab note 8 to brush the landscape then using my computer for texturing, lighting and rendering.
