So I got given an oldish computer that was working fine for about a day. It is on Windows XP and when I boot up I get an error saying "the application failed to initialise properly (0xc000001d) Click on OK to terminate the application"

Now when I do what it says I see the same message once again and then I can't do anything like access task bar. But I can use task manager.

I have a copy of Vista on disc and I'm trying to boot using the disc drive and I'm just loading up windows xp and yet again seeing the same.

Is there any way I could fix this?

Ok so what you need to do is while it is booting up press F10 to enter the Bios... Than what you are going to do is make the disk drive your main boot drive and install windows Vista. I would recommend a clean install because you are having that issue.

I'm not able to do anything when booting up apart from click the F11 button which brings up a menu for selecting first boot device and I have 3 options.

IDE-0: Maxtor 6E040L0
CD/DVD-0
CD/DVD-1
