For those who are unaware, the affair facilitating website 'Ashley Madison' has been hacked by a group calling itself, 'The Impact Team.'
The group is threatening to release all of the private information of the 37 million users if the site is not completely shut down.
According to law enforcement, it looks like it is actually the work of just one person from inside the company but that is irrelevant to my point here.

Their main point of contention is that the site charges a fee of $20 to remove a user's profile, but, according to the hackers, that is misleading and they actually keep information about the user, like credit card transactions, real names and addresses, etc.

This group's logic is - "I am against you having these people's personal information, it's an invasion of privacy, so to protest I'm going to release all of their personal information if you don't shut the site down."
I don't even have to point out how circular, flawed and hypocritical that logic is.

I personally couldn't care less whether or not Ashley Madison stays open for business.
It's not my problem to deal with and it's not the place for me to stand up on my high horse and say, 'You are all wrong and should be punished for your transgressions.'
This hacker group has made the mistake of thinking that it is their place.

Well for starters I actually didnt know what the site was for and from what I can see its a website to help married or coupled people hookup with someone (cheat)..Now its not for me to judge but thats kinda messed up. Although releasing someones personal info is also just as messed up.. Especially when the goal in mind is to release the info just because a site holds that info. Pretty circular like you said.

Could this hacker maybe have been in some kinda beef with the site? Maybe their significant other you know slipped one in on the low and now they are trying to expose everyone? Either way its not justified and this is still a pretty shit situation.

It is my strong suspicion that this guy has some personal problem with the site.
I think he'll be caught soon enough, law enforcement said that they were close to finding out who it is, and I wouldn't be surprised if his significant other used the site's services themselves.

From what I've read, it does seem like he has personal problems with the site. Another adult hookup site was hacked two months before this. Wouldn't be surprised if it was the same guy/group.

It doesn't make sense for the hackers to be against invasion of privacy when they're going to be doing the same thing. I think cheaters (meaning people who use Ashley Madison or not) should be exposed, but releasing people's personal information is going too far and doesn't make any sense.

I laughed too when I read that they're the ones who actually care about privacy in the same post where they threatened to release millions of innocent (but morally questionable) people's information.

it is a invasion of privacy but if your the type of person that goes on websites looking for other men/ women to sleep with when your married, then i'm sorry but you deserve everything that happens to you.

But on the privacy issue, they shouldn't be blackmailing them with a $20 shut down fee because they know they will pay it to get their info of the website so their partners don't see it.

I'm fine with their information being released only if they actually engaged in some sort of sexual affair. You don't get to cheat bro, man up and break it off if you aren't happy with your girlfriend/wife.
