You are a UK resident which means that however old you are, if your a first time driver, insurance will be the most expensive part. 2.5 litres seems a bit overkill for your first car. When I first thought about getting a car I thought about an old BMW 3 series however I soon began to think that it wouldn't be wise and I should go for something with a smaller engine and cheaper so I did some research and came up with a few cars which I began to look for via [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] or any local garage

I'm an 18 year old driver and I own a [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] , it's a great little car and it's relatively cheap on insurance (I pay £750 and I'm 18 years old)

I'm not trying to put you off getting a sports car, by all means do what you want to do, but I'd suggest doing some insurance quotes on [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] before you make your decision.

Reasonable First Cars
There are a few options for small first cars but you wouldn't need to spend the maximum £25000, you can get a very good first car that will last you a long time for about £6000 or less.

The [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] would be my first suggestion, these have engines ranging from 1.2, 1.4 to 1.9 engines. I have a 1.2 8v and it's very good for city driving however on the motorway it does lack acceleration but when you get up to speed it can happily sit at 90mph.

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ] is another good option for a first car, it's relatively spacious inside and it looks quite nice (even the 3dr model is spacious at the back however if your tall it does lack some headroom). In fact only reason I went for a Fiat over one of these is because they didn't have any in stock.

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ] is another choice for a good first car, Zetec models are insurance (I have a friend who has one) and they are quite roomy and nippy at the same time

Sports Cars
I'd suggest something small but good like one of the new [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] as it's a nice car (looking and performance) and pretty practical as well. You can get one of those from new as they start at £16000, this makes them cheaper compared to their arguably worse rivals.

I'd also suggest something like a [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] or the new [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] but you'd have to buy new to be under your budget as the S1 starts at £25000 and the M135i starts at £30000.

If you want something a little bigger the new [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] is an option but also you'd have to buy used with this as they start at £28000 for a 2.0 TSI 3dr (with performance pack)

Get a small car with a small engine.

LOL can you guys not drive over there or what. I have a 4.6l V8 Mustang and all of my friends have atleast a 3.0 or more. Some even have mustangs, mostly V6s tho. We all handle are cars fine wtf are you saying youll wrap it around a pole lmao. AND YES. I KNOW, its not all about the litre size, the m35i is fast as **** (if thats what its called haha) but saying "anything over a 2.5 L" is dangerous is way to undefined.

It's pointless anyway because insurance will be around £10k per year. Also a lot of youths in the UK race on crappy roads and end up in a bush.

Also most Americans drive autos, they are simple and idiot proof. Whereas if you drive a auto in the UK you'll be taken the piss out of, if you move your foot off the clutch in a fast car you will end up in the back of someones car.

No shit thats kind of how a clutch works. Also my cars stick. I still dont understand why you all care so much about americans driving automatic, many find it convienent because its less stressful. I personally like my standard, but I can see why some dont. In the end UK has shitty drivers all over.

Holy shit you are one dense ****. THE AVERAGE driver on the roads in the UK. Obviously people with incredible track records are **** great at driving. Im talking about your average "Oh look a car is stopping ahead maybe ill just go around" drivers that you get so much of in the UK and Russia.

Also stick is a slang word over here in America. Ever noticed how we say some things differently than you? Dumbass.

lmao when did trying to give good advice turn into america vs. uk in terms of driving standards.

I agree that some drivers in the UK aren't great but most of those are in their 70s and really shouldn't be driving anymore.

But saying that this man shouldn't get a 2.5l for a first car doesn't mean that we can't drive them. Just trying to save this man some money and not have an accident
