I guess they both have their pros and cons. But I'd get the 970. And before you go oh he's an nvidia fanboy lol no I have an R9 270.

I went with the 970
had enough of AMD Drivers crashing on me, yet to have a NVidia driver crash (apart from when i tried a 1500MHz overclock..)
my fps with 970 G1 Gaming
GTA V: 60 maxed 1080P, 45 ish maxed 1440P
Crysis 3: 60 maxed 1080P, 35 1440P
CoD: 70+ fps maxed 1080P, 50+ 1440P
BF4 80+ FPS maxed 1080P, 60+ 1440P

The 970 outperforms the 290x, Is more efficient and runs at lower temps. The 970 is a no brainer.

Get which ever is cheapest or you like the look off. (cooler wise)

whichever looks the nicest to you
however EVGA don't have backplates
and MSI/ASUS have passive cooling
