So I can ether get TWO "MSI GeForce GT 740 4GB" which is GDDR3 OR One "MSI R9 280 GAMING 3GB" which is GDDR5.
Which option would have the best overall performance for me. Please don't reply if you have no idea what your talking about

This sounds like a pre-building company?

The single 280 will wipe the floor with the 2 740s and it will cause less issues.

Whats the rest of your build going to be?

Isn't that due to it being GDDR5?

nah, it's just a far better card. the 740 is a very very low end card and the 280 is a mid range card.

Oh, i read something online since i asked that and someone said that it's the multiplier or something?

The higher the number at the end, the faster the memory. So GDDR5 is the fastest of those three (and it's usually a multiplier - so GDDR5 is 5x data rate whereas DDR3 is only 3x). The G is supposed to signify designed for GPUs, but often just is added for graphics cards with no real change in design. So DDR3 roughly equals GDDR3, and GDDR5 is faster. Thas said, you won't find main RAM labeled with the "G"

No motherboards support DDR5 as primary RAM - DDR3 is as high as it goes. And you can use a video card with any sort of vRAM as long as your motherboard supports the connector (PCI Express 2.0, AGP, etc), vRAM speed doesn't impact compatibility.

Memory wise yes, but can you go by that on low end cards? No.

VRAM shouldn't be taken into consideration when buying GPU's anymore. Yeah sure if you need more chances are you have 4k and actually need it.

But the architecture of the card is so much more important. The 280 will wipe the SLI 740's in their own shit.

Also, SLI 740's who wants that...

Can you even SLI GT 740's? I might be tripping, but I'm almost 100% sure that you can't SLI anything under GTX *60. 760, and 960 can run 2-way SLI. 770, and 970 can run 3-way SLI. 780, 780Ti, 980, and all the Titan's will run 4-way SLI.

GT 740 is a poor choice anyway, so if you can SLI, 2 of 'em would just be a worse choice. The 280 is the better card. Don't even focus on VRAM when the cards are different. In the case of the GTX 960, a 4GB 960 is going to be better than a 2GB 960 because it will be able to push higher resolutions and more textures and what not, but a 3GB GTX 780Ti, is still better than a 4GB GTX 960.
