I am looking to upgrade my factory motherboard to a board that is capable of overclocking.

My current specs:

Also have a MSI GTX 960 GAMING 4G that's going to be installed tomorrow and I plan to overclock on that a bit as well.

My PSU is a Corsair GS600

You have a locked CPU, you're not going to be doing any overclocking on it. Use the money to add an SSD instead. Also, what case do you have? Your PSU isn't anything special, would be worth upgrading when you can tbh, but no need to go out of your way to do so.

But this guy I know irl has the same exact CPU as me and he is overclocking it. I have a Antec Nine Hundred Two V3 case. Why upgrade my PSU though when it's working fine?

He builds computers and he recommended me this motherboard:

I just want some opinions on here to see what everyone thinks.

He obviously has the i7 2600k

You can only overclock the k version.

The psu isnt the best of quality but its fine, dont worry about it for now.

If its not to late just return your gpu and buy a r9 290 or a gtx 970.

Or keep it and buy a ssd.

He probably has a 2600k, which is the unlocked version. I mean, you can do very small overclocks with locked CPUs but it's not even worth it, it's going to be something like a 2% performance increase at best. That's not a valid argument for keeping a PSU. A bad PSU puts the entirety of your system at risk.

If you have clothes with holes that still work, do you keep 'em or replace 'em? It's not worth avoiding other valuable upgrades to upgrade the PSU IMHO, but it should be upgraded when you have some spare cash.

Oh I just realized he does in fact have the K version of the 2600, I have the box he gave me and it says it on there. Should I upgrade my CPU then or is the one I have right now good enough for GTA V? And I am fine with my MSI GTX 960 4GB. What is a good PSU to upgrade from then?

If you have the budget for it upgrade to a i5 4690k and get a z97 mobo, you would also need to buy aftermarket cooler to be able to get some decent overclocks.

Your i7 is fine though in my opinion, Its old but still performs pretty well.

Buy a ssd

No point upgrading. If you upgrade to a 2600k, you'll still need a new mobo to overclock and that'd be a waste since for the same price, you'd be able to get a Haswell or Haswell refresh board and a Haswell chip. Broadwell should be here next month, and Skylake should be here by the end of the year. AMD's new AM4 socket and Intel's Cannonlake architecture should be coming mid 2016 and your 2600 is still going to be fine for a while. I'd suggest holding off for AM4 or LGA1151(Skylake/Cannonlake). The 960 was a poor choice. It's a good card but it's placement in the market is terrible, it's just not worth the cost when cheaper cards out-perform it or slightly more expensive cards significantly out-perform it. It's fine though. As for PSU, you can hold on to your current unit for now, it's going to be worth getting a good quality, modular unit for an upgrade IMHO, but it depends how much you have to spend for a PSU and when you have the money.

Well looks like I'm not upgrading anything then, no need.

I'll probably get an SSD though, what's a good one?
