Animal welfare groups claim Channel 4 is killing animals to boost ratings after contestants on The Island slashed pigs throat on screen

Channel 4 has been accused of killing animals to boost ratings after contestants slashed the throat of a pig on its Bear Grylls reality show
which has attracted nearly 500 complaints from viewers.

Animal welfare groups including People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said Channel 4 had shown a callous disregard for
life on the show, The Island with Bear Grylls.
Four women were shown creeping up to a sleeping pig before plunging a knife into its throat.
The pig could be heard squealing throughout.

It followed a previous episode of the show in which its male contestants accidentally
killed and ate a rare species of crocodile.
Channel 4 said it had so far received about 450 complaints about the show, a large
number of which are understood to relate to the pig and crocodile killings.

Media regulator Ofcom said on Wednesday it had received 16 complaints about the show and was considering whether to launch an investigation.
Peta director Mimi Bekhechi said: There is simply no excuse for this kind of callous disregard for life.
TV producers and broadcasters can entertain audiences without resorting to cruelty to animals.

Channel 4 defended the scenes, saying an important part of the show was finding out if the contestants
were capable of hunting and killing for meat and they had all been trained in killing animals humanely.

These people understand millions of animals are slaughtered a day for people to eat, right?

God forbid humans, who eat meat, actually kill a pig(for it's meat) and eat it to survive.

I say the only reason they shouldn't show it is because of the kids who probably won't be too happy seeing all the blood and guts(if they did show it.)

They didn't need to kill them in order to survive though.
They are not in danger of dying on the island, so surely the killing of the pigs and crocodile was unnecessary?

We don't need to kill animals by the millions in order to survive, yet we do it anyway?
There is more than enough food to go around, but we still have excesses of meat all the time.

If you eat meat from the store, you can't say shit about this being animal cruelty.
That pig died pretty compared to how it would've been treated in a slaughter house.

I am against that happening as well.
I'm not arguing that this was animal cruelty, just that it was unnecessary because it didn't need to happen for a TV show where the contestants lives are not in danger.

Either way you look at it, animals like this will continue to be killed. I don't argue that the amount we kill isn't exactly needed but we'll do it anyways. Were humans, we'll keep going doing as we are now.

As for the show, people really shouldn't care. People like this care more for animals they'll never have known about otherwise than they do their humans. They claim this world needs to be better? Well, they can walk in any major city and see plenty of homeless people whom they could help out.

It's a program where they need to survive. I've watched all episodes this series and last series and its a good program. They are living on increasingly lower calorie meals each episode and everytime they catch something its vital protein.

They are supposed to be like cave men.

Don't like it, don't watch it! Simple.

I don't like unnecessary slaughter, as I amagainst Halal Meat and things of that kind. But this is not really anything people should be getting worked up about, I wouldn't slit a pigs throat, but it is for a survival TV program so trying to make it slightly realistic is nothing to worry about.
